I have a question, why are fans of MLP nicknamed "brownies"? I'm not really seeing a connection there. Unless that's an acronym for something.....
My sister is one of them. She doesn't believe that there needs to be a separation of church and state- she believes that there needs to be a legal code based on the bible.
The last time they tried that, it backfired tremendously (Crusades ring a bell?) which is why popes, and other religious leaders no longer have any saying on any army.

I then asked her if all of the Native Americans whose ancestors were murdered by the founders of this Christian nation should also accept it or leave, and she said "Ok, maybe not them."Heh, I love when people do that, or they call for all immigrants to leave the country =P.

I will never understand why some people are against the idea that 2 people should get married.
Some people honestly believe that their religion should be the law. They want their legal code to coincide with their own religion. It's quite disheartening that such black and white mentality has clouded an issue in which "neither" is the appropriate option. One side sees the correct action to make homosexual marriage illegal, because the pro-homo crowd is trying to force their beliefs on others. The other side sees the correct action to make homosexual marriage legal, because the anti-homo crowd is trying to force their beliefs on others. Irony abounds.
Of course, don't dare stand in the middle and say that it really isn't up to government to decide. Both sides hate anyone who isn't on their side. Being on neither is not for the faint-of-heart.

I sometimes wonder what the world would have looked like without religion - for better or worse.
That also happened. Sodom and Gomorrah didn't turned out that well.

chances are, they'd go insane for having to do their own chores rather than pay someone else to do them. The economy of the nation would bankrupt as so much of the labor force would go, and most of the consumers would go as well.
People tend to take the little things for granted, but once they're gone...... OH MY GOD HOW YOU MISS THEM.
A meta example for gaming would be the LFG feature for World of Warcraft. Love it or hate it, that thing is now a MUST HAVE in any online game. I know that after several years of being used to just queue for a dungeon on the LFG, trying to just assemble a group the good old fashioned way on Lineage II and SWTOR was nothing short ofa NIGHTMARE.
Nightmare I say.

@MyTie- Most of the people making headlines, to be fair, aren't the "It's none of the government's business" people. The most vocal ones are the ones who are actively pushing each side of the issue. If there was an actual push to get the government to stay out of marriage, then it would actually get attention. But as far as I can tell, most people who feel like you do- that marriage should be completely removed from the government- aren't lobbying for it, or pushing campaigns to get it changed. There's no threat/promise of that becoming an option because not many people are trying to make it happen. The people who are actually acting on this are the two far ends of the spectrum, and so that's who the debate tends to be between.
If you start pushing for laws de-regulating marriage entirely, I'm sure the debates will start to include that stance.

I don't mind immigrants, but illegal immigration does bother me.

I disagree. The "far ends of the spectrum" account for most of the people. Nearly everyone who has an opinion on the issue feel either "for" or "against". I'm the smallest of minority on the issue.

@MyTie- then that's another reason it never really comes into play- if the vast majority of people want government recognition of marriage for various reasons, then that's not going to change. If the debate was about whether to continue to use fossil fuel cars, or convert to more energy efficient ones, and you had two sides split on the idea, and a very small minority saying "lets all just walk," no one is going to pay attention to the third option that very few people want.

That doesn't mean I'm wrong.

My mom's mom's sister's daughter's son is in prison for touching a kid inappropriately. He's this kind of... well... he is an idiot. I mean that in a kind way. He couldn't hold a 3 minute conversation with anyone without trying to make them feel dumber than him. No big deal to me. I mean, that's him and his life. He lives a long long ways away and I haven't talked to him in YEARS. But, I knew him as a kid, for about a year. It was aggravating for me to put up with, but I knew him. Now, my family keeps coming to me to tell them about how he was as a kid, and I know they want to hear nice things, because nothing nice can be said about him in present time.
Anyway, I'm a real matter of fact cynic in real life (imagine that). I have trouble forming words for these people. I want to be nice, but I don't know how to do that without lieing to them, which I also don't want to do. I end up just staring at them blankly, or changing the subject.

I'd probably just tell them he's a tool; I do that with my one uncle if anyone ever asks what he is up to lately.

You could always go and give him a sermon MyTie, based on Matthew 25:36 or so
