its common to use SoMartyr/Blood for insances and group PvE. With the tank taking all the damage (ideally), a ret paladin will not be able to make use of his Spiritual Attunement unless he has a healer healing the damage done by his SoMartyr/Blood (which in turn replenishes the Paladins mana).
Using Martyr or Blood in PvP is generally not a good idea, you dont want to give your opponent a head start in the fight by draining your own health. The damage done by Martyr and Blood is more than a ret paladin can effectively heal on his own. Even though there are some paladins out there that still use Martyr/Blood in PvP, usually with a healer following them around... but i still dont think its worth the risk.
Now, im not ret at the moment so i dont know how a Righteousness+glyph will compare to a SoCommand+glyph. Maybe you can test them both at the practice dummies in town.

I actually use Seal of command alot in 5 mans when I was ret. The reason being is that there is a ton of damage incoming on alot of pulls and, you have the option t sit and drink for a couple seconds after each pull. In raids, that's a different story. More healers, longer fights...def Martyr/blood all the way. (Unless the fight has rediculous raid damage).

Oh, btw...SoC with the glyph actaully out performed SoB/M until it was nerfed. Proc rate from haste was nerfed too. It was done so that SoM had another reason to be used. After that, SoC is going to be better than any other seal of ret, if you are soloing/farming.

cool thanks guys, just a 2nd Qn tho, being a ret pally we get rediculous crit and that would allow me the instant cast flash heals after judgements, i was thinking of more a when im out questing situation.
1. would that be enough to heal through it? assuming sheath of light n all that, and most prb common flash crits
2. do u only gain mana from attunement if someone else heals you?

(edit: or if not heal through it at least make it managable? or am i going to be looking a pretty serious hp drop)
1. You'll get to a dps point when you can't out heal SoB/SoM, besides FoL resets your swing timer which is a net dps loss anyways.
2. only when someone else heals you.
