Is it possible to get it to compare leather/mail if I am already wearing a plate item?

You might want to check out the addon, EquipCompare.
Why? rating buster will do this.

If your toon is unable to equip an item, ratingbuster will not compare it for you.
remember the comparison stats you see with ratingbuster apply to YOUR toon.
When someone of another class links two items and ask which is better....don't bother to respond.
Tell them to get ratingbuster and make up their own mind.

I actually have this problem on my DK. If I look at anything other than Plate, it does not show the stat comparison. This is rather annoying when trying to put together an offspec DPS set as that doesn't really NEED to be plate.

I might be mistaken, but in RatingBuster's very extensive configuration screens, I think there is an option to tell it to restrict the armor types in its comparisons.

Hmmm... I will have to look again. I dug through there once but couldn't find anything.

DK's are still a bit odd for RatingsBuster, but there is the option in there somewhere to override armor restrictions and show comparisons no matter what.
As to EquipCompare, that mod does nothing more than always show the tooltip to what you are wearing, instead of having to hold down Shift, compared to what you mouse-over.
