Looking to make a script (need assistance)

I've checked out the available functions so what I have in mind should be perfectly acceptable as a macro/script. Since I'm unfamiliar with the syntax for getting script to use /cast in the same way common macros do, I'd like a bit of help.
I would like to have a script that check for the Shadow Word: Pain debuff on the target and, if true, allows me to cast Devouring Plague, otherwise it would instead have me cast Shadow Word:Pain.
I've seen the functions for this, but I need a bit of help with the rest of the code that glues them together. Anyone got any experience with this?

For reference:
UnitDebuff()

Highly doubt this will work or not (I dont have WoW running, nor am I a code monkey), but might get you started:
/run local B=UnitDebuff("target","Shadow Word: Pain" ); if B then CastSpellByName("Devouring Plague"); else CastSpellByName("Shadow Word: Pain"); end end
Try taking out the ";"'s after the if statement if that dosnt work.
Edit 1: Typo
Edit 2: Forgot to add "Good Luck!"

Tried it out. No luck. Won't even run because "CastSpellByName" has long since been restricted.
I'm tinkering around with the /cast option but no effect so far. If anyone else has any insight, let me know.

Sad as it may be, I still wish there were a better way of doing this than a sloppy castsequence. I was trying to avoid at all cost using specific modifiers for spell casts. So far I've managed to squeeze in everything with just plain 'mod'. Looks like I don't have much of a choice now.
I don't suppose there's anything else I could do, is there?
