Couldn't believe this happened the other day...STORY TIME!
Dropped for us in Azjol Narub during the Anub fight. SOmeone said to greed, we all greed, tank needed. IN his defense, someone in the group said "Get over it, it was an uopgrade for him, it's ok that he needed it" WTF is wrong with people! A 5k gold dps BoE item drops and it's an "upgrade" for a tank? Sounds like the tank and person who said that were in that one together.
pugging is, unfortuantely, a necessary part of this game. You can't run ALL heroics in guild, unless you are one of the top guilds in all of WoW and have hundreds of players. Still cannot believe it happened, and another person in the group defended him on the decision. The tank had no reply to his decision either, he was quiet and would not re-roll for it.

I see your point though an upgrade after all is an upgrade regardless of the perceived resale value. I would however have a difficult time justifying that as a tanking drop. Dps no question but tanking? Sounds kinda needy to me.
In the future when in a group (guild or pug) always
need
on epic BoE items unless you are certain you do not want to be involved with it. That would at least eliminate the potential for ninja looters.
Addressing the money issue, if it was an upgrade I would still rather have him use the item than try to sell it. Should he decide to sell it then that is certainly a ninja. Another note, I am NOT someone that believes in putting stuff in the guild bank for alleged "future" use.

the funny thing is that i'm a tank and im actually wearing that ring. it's a really good pre raid druid tank item. sadly, i had to put it on and not sell it cuz there is no real druid tank gear out there now.

In general if I'm running with PuGs and I see anything BoE that's more than a standard blue, I'll wait to see what people do. If anyone else needs, I'll also need, and if I win, /roll it out with the other 3 people that didn't try to ninja.
Generally everyone just needs anyway though, which is the best thing to do.

If people claim BoE's as upgrades, it's polite for them to equip it in front of everyone so that it becomes souldbound and they're not going to turn around and sell it.
Back in the days of classic WoW the groups with whom I ran five mans always followed this convention. Needing a BoE was follow by an immediate equip. Somehow that fell apart in tBC and these days, everyone who wants the item rolls need. Personally I preferred the old way, but ninjas seem more prevalent than ever.

Already sold 2 ! But got them legally through greeding.
On the topic, waiting till everybody does greed or need only works if the others aren't doing the same as you, so you end up with an issue of trusting them anyway. My policy is greed on all BoE stuff but i am rarely enough in pugs for it not to matter.

Perhaps he has his own 'chanter on an alt and he would like to send it that way to get it done.

He can buy a vellum and send the enchant. That excuse doesn't work anymore.

Good point, I hadn't even thought of that
