People use addons such as Recount to track their dps. Low memory addon, just a box that sits in the corner and tracks everything you and your party are doing and makes the calculations.

Not to mention to only time any kind of DPS is shown on your character sheet it is merely your weapon DPS modified by AP. That's it, no abilities, spells, anything, just as if you were sitting there auto-attacking something.

Thanks, you both are great.
I don't really mess around with addons, but as I near 80, it sounds like I might need to have more...
I wouldn't say you
need
addons really. Certainly they make life easier, but so long as you're on your game and can work with the basic UI you have, it's not really an issue. I got to 70 with no addons, and when I was continually pulling aggro in heroics someone suggested Omen. After that I was pretty hooked...I love addons ;)
Some groups won't let you run with them without Omen and if you don't know your dps.
Omen
and Recount should see you through easy enough.

... Recount to track their dps. Low memory addon,
It's hardly the type of addon that is low memory or cpu usage.
So many calculations and data storage methods going on so you can review the data later.
Btw, unitframe mod called
pitbull
provides threat bar on all of its unitframes if you so wish.
