Is being hit capped really more important than spell power?

The Shadow Guide up on the forums says that it is, but is removing the chance to miss on like 1 attack out of every 10 really more important than more extra spell power or crit chance? I've done the math, and getting hit capped only gives you 11% extra chance to hit. Does it really matter all that much when you're raid buffed?

oh ABSOLUTELY. There is no attribute that gives you more bang for your buck for ANY class than hit rating until hit capped, or at least extremely close to hit cap.
Let's say that you ignore hit all together and you fling 100 spells for an average of 3k each (completely arbitrary numbers btw). Without your 11% hit, you'll be doing base damage before crits of 267k damage instead of 300k damage.
In ALL cases, your hit is the first number that is calculated, if you bottle neck yourself there and your spell misses, the extra 0.5% crit you took over that 0.5% hit rating won't make a difference at all.

Hmm yeah I see your points... From what I heard I thought spell power was the most important. Thanks for clearing that up.

Spellpower is very important -- you may have heard that Spellpower is the most important stat when compared to Crit and Haste. Until you get close to the hit cap, though, focus on Hit.
Yea that is pretty much what I heard, I didn't even know about hit rating until I started playing. My friend who told me this is a mage so i guess all he really thinks about at this point is CRITCRITCRITCRIT and spell power.

Well I'm pretty sure he knows about hit rating, he just never mentioned it to me. Just checked his armory, he's got 229 hit rating which is 8.73% extra hit chance which is good enough if you ask me considering he has 30% crit chance with fire spells, and he's not even in full valorous gear or raid buffed.
Here's his armory if you're curious.

I play both a mage and a preist and hit is enormously important. Both quantitatively and qualitative the DPS increase of hit cap vs not is very noticible. I know that anecdotal evidence is anecdotal but I saw an increase of almost 200 DPS hit capped for a frost mage vs about 3% under cap. This was in BC though where hit was very different. Hit is always worth it. You might not get as many pretty big numbers flash across the screen but you get more numbers overall and a lot less frustrating misses.

If you are below the cap, you will get partial resists on all of your spells, such that they will do less damage, with the combat log showing something like this:
Your Shadow Word: Pain deals 600 damage
Your Shadow Word: Pain deals 450 damage (150 resisted)
Your Shadow Word: Pain deals 450 damage (150 resisted)
Your Shadow Word: Pain deals 600 damage
Your Shadow Word: Pain deals 300 damage (300 resisted)Partial resists are the work of spell resistance, not chance to miss. If you are below the hit cap you will
miss
occasionally, but you will only ever get
resists
(complete or partial) if the mob has more spell resistance than you spell penetration.
(unless this got changed... I don't think I would've missed that.)

It's of course a balance but hit is more valuable than spell power in most gear situations. Missing 11% is a lot and it is annoying when a mind blast or DP misses since it still triggers the cooldown and misses throw off your casting since you may have started to cast a mind flay before you notice that your VT missed (with latency I usually hit my next cast before the current one is quite finished). So 11% miss can result in more than 11% decrease in DPS.
As I said it's balance especially when gearing up. If you have a green with 20 hit on it and no other damage stats (just stam and int) and you get an epic in the same slot that doesn't have hit but has 60 spell power and 40 crit obviously it's better to loose the hit but for items that are close to the same level you want enough hit to not miss. As with many stats there is a synergy between them - the more spell power you have the more important hit is (each spell you miss is more potential damage lost) so once you are hit capped each point of spell power results in more damage done.
