For having just hit 80 and attacking the raid boss dummy, 1.2k is pretty respectable. Even with most of the gear you can get from heroics, and the polearm from 10 man Maexxna, my arms warrior only pulls about 1500 to 1700 on the raid boss dummy. This is because the dummy
sucks
at gauging warrior DPS: even just a single raid buffs like LotP/Rampage or Windfury/Icy Talons can have a huge effect on your rage generation and thus total damage output. Probably you're also not hit capped and should be using the heroic dummy to better gauge how you'd fare in heroics, not the raid boss one.
In all honestly 2k DPS is an unrealistic expectation for a PUG. ~1.5k-1.7k - which is what I would expect you to pull in a group if you make good use of Sweeping Strikes, Bladestorm, and don't suck - is more than adequate. It is akin to groups expecting their tanks to be geared out from raids before they tank their Nexus group.
You might also want to stay out of the truly hard heroics for the time being: Don't join timed Strath runs, Halls of Stone, or possibly UP, though really HoS and UP stress the tank and healer more than the DPS. Strath is also problematic because at this point even terribads expect they can be carried through to the drake, and so everyone assumes a Strath run is a timed run.
but with the nerf to sudden death i dont see how arms could possible do more damage then fury
The change to sudden death is a buff for PvE. The less rage Execute uses, the more efficient its damage. Saving the 30 rage for something else outputs more damage for the same amount of rage, raising your total damage, unless in you're in massive-rage-font situations like some raids.
But yeah, fury is right now completely superior to arms. Unless you are married to arms, or have completely suck weapons (like your only two other hander is from level 70), fury will probably be stronger.

If you wanne DPS in raids(and I mean real DPS, notif you just wanne join a raid every 2 weeks) respec fury asap.
Arms cant keep up with TG fury.

In the odd case that there's no feral druid in the raid then the trauma debuff which the arms warrior brings is a quite big DPS boost to the fury warriors' or rogues' bleed effects.

I was doing respectable dps as Arms before 3.0.8 but once the Sudden Death nerf hit it dropped considerably. I switched to Fury and am loving it. I still have some gearing up to do but with 10 or 11 epics I'm usually doing between 2-3K raid dps depending on buffs now, even managed to out-dps my guild's resident dps king, a glass-cannon mage, for a whopping 4K on one of the Naxx bosses, and you can bet I let him hear about it after someone spammed the recount DPS. :-) The way the talent trees are now, Fury's actually pretty damn decent for pvp too, with almost twice the amount of self-heals available versus Arms via Bloodthirst and Bloodcraze, not to mention the ability to reduce your opponent's healing with Furious Attacks, ala Mortal Strike in Arms. Also, Rampage provides a nice +5 crit buff to raid groups when it procs, which is often with a decent crit rating. Although as an Arms warrior I hated Blizz for nerfing Sudden Death, I gotta say, they more than made up for it with the possibilities Fury holds now. I'm still learning how to pvp with this spec but I think it's really possible to excel in both pvp and as raid dps with the right talent picks.
PS-- getting used to the right rotation is really important to making your dps as high as you can. WW - BT - instant Slam (when Bloodsurge procs), otherwise HS or Cleave for your rage dump - BT - WW, rinse and repeat, with judicious use of Berserker Rage and Recklessness. Proper rotation = leaving those auto-pilot, overpowered, disease-DOT-relying DK's in the dust. :-)
PPS-- I do understand that the change to Sudden Death was a tweak rather than a true nerf, and that it's more efficient rage-wise now but I would have rather kept the 13K crits. Now with my 18/53 Arms/Fury spec,

, rage generation is not much of a problem.
