The macro command to make your pet attack is:
/petattack

before the recent change to the pet's defensive behaviour i think a lot of locks had a macro like
#showtooltip
/petattack
/cast corruption
but now defensive behaviour makes them attack what you attack so that's not needed.

This is my pet attack macro.
/petfollow
/petattack
/startattack
Basically what this does is this:
If you do not have a target and you click it, your pet goes back to you.
If you have a target, your pet tries to attack that target.
If you have one target, and mouse over another, the pet will attack the target that you have your mouse over.
It starts your melee swing. <-- explanation for this follows:
I found out when soloing that there's actually some very little time gaps where the melee swing gets off, where you can get a 100-150 damage extra on your target, and it looks awesome as well throwing dots with your weapon in your hand. :D
This part is, of course, not important at all.
It's a little bit tricky when fighting boss encounters where you need to get your pet back to you fast with this macro, since it requires you to de-select the boss and not have your mouse on top of the boss for your pet to follow you, and this will probably sink your DPS if you try to use it that way, but in some ways I think it's worth the sacrifice if you only want one button. On the other hand, you could just use the normal blizzard key binds, as our friend Ruffi here says.
This macro works for every class with a pet you can control, and it works especially well with Death Knight since it starts the melee swing, if you have one of those.

While that's true, if you're opening with a spell that has a cast time your pet won't actually start attacking until the spell is cast, so I still include /petattack in my macros where appropriate.
