Block Rating vs Avoidance Musings

So, I just want to say that starting this post, I'm not sure where it's going to lead. Once I've finished hopefully I'll draw a conclusion.
Lately I've started to lean more and more toward my block value and block rating set as opposed to my avoidance set. There are a lot of pieces in Naxx that are Defense, Block Rating, and Block Value, and I've been getting some odd looks from some of the people in my guild who are wondering why I'm spending DKP on these pieces as a warrior.
Just as an easy to see exercise, lets take an example of 100 hits against me, filling out the combat table. First, my two gear sets, all unbuffed:
Avoidance: 544 defense (5.76% miss), 23.72% dodge, 19.45% parry, 22.90% block (1134 BV)
BR/BV: 537 defense (5.48% miss), 19.26% dodge, 17.21% parry, 30.67% block (1579 BV)
Against a level 83 boss, that reduces my miss chance by 0.60%. Lets assume 8k (after armor reduction) hits will be coming at me. Also assume Glyph of Blocking is always up, so increase the BVs to 1247 and 1737. Also assume critical block talent, so 30% of my blocks will be for double.
Avoidance:
1-10: Miss (10%)
11-34: Dodge (24%)
35-53: Parry (19%)
54-69: Reg Block (16%, -1247 Damage)
70-76: Crit Block (7%, -2494 Damage)
77-100: Regular Hit (24%, -0 Damage)
So assuming 8k hits. I'm getting hit 47 times, taking off 16*-1247 and 7*-2494. So total is 8000*47 - 16*1247 - 7*2494 for a total of 376000 - 19952 - 17458 = 338590 total damage taken.
BR / BV:
1-10: Miss (10%)
11-29: Dodge (19%)
30-46: Parry (17%)
47-68: Reg Block (22%, -1737 Damage)
69-77: Crit Block (9%, -3774 Damage)
78-100: Regular Hit (23%, -0 Damage)
Again assuming 8k hits. I'm getting hit 54 times, taking off 22*-1737 and 9*-3774. So total is 8000*54 - 22*1737 - 9*3774 for a total of 432000 - 38214 - 33966 = 359820 total damage taken.
----------------------------------------
So, conclusions. Looking at a normal, average 8k hit from an average boss, using my BV set subjects me to ~20k more damage (6% more) over 100 attacks than the avoidance set. The trade off would be that the incoming damage would be "smoother" and less spiky; I'd take more, but smaller hits. The other tradeoff is that I would have better threat generation and damage with the BR/BV set. Another aspect that wasn't taken into consideration here was the spamming of Shield Block. 100% block rate for 10 seconds at 200% Block Value would be over 7k damage taken off of every hit; nearly full avoidance.
Of course as the damage output of a boss decreases (Loatheb, for example) the block value set becomes stronger. The lower the incoming hits, the greater the percentage of damage blocked and thus the better it is. For higher damage fights (MT or OT Patch, Sapphiron) where you are seeing 10k-11k or (OT Patch) 21k hits, Avoidance is clearly the better choice.
Anyway, just thought I'd lay it out there. A lot of people still just barely glance at Block Rating gear as a hold over from TBC when it was useless. It is actually quite useful when combined with high block value and when used in the right circumstances.

The miss chance is far too low - 5% is the base, your defense will increase it by a lot (around another 5%).

funny, i've been wondering the same thing - especially after seeing all the BV/BR gear that's dropping. i'm going to try my block set in naxx this week with the 5% block meta and 5/5 shield specialization and see how it works.

i prefer dodge and parry... why not Parry/dodge and take 0 damage instead of blocking and still take 6k damage :S
i like have 0 damage.
Did you not read the end of the original post? The choice is between two pieces of gear where the first gives 1% avoidance and the second gives 2% block rating and some block value. Would you rather take 0 damage 1% of the time, or reduce 2000 damage 2% of the time and do more damage and threat. Healers like smoother, less spiky damage. If you run with druids (and who doesn't in a raid), smooth constant damage is healed up nicely by hots.
