As it turns out, they did answer this question at Blizzcon, but it wasn't caught on record.
There's a hidden clown in Durotar that then got corrupted. All the mobs in Northrend would have big red noses and oversized shoes. They would throw pies in your face and squirt water out of flowers on thier shirts. The lich king would be riding a unicycle.
This supremely more powerful being would not only have beaten Illuden, but have made him into a stooge clown, who would have captivated the heart of Jaina, out of vengace to the Lich King. They would have had little lich/clown kids, one of which would have been adopted by Thrall, raised like an Orc. This clown/lich/orc heir to Ogrimar, son of Jaina and clown Illuden, would have gone back to the Lich King to demand his place in Northrend. After that, everyone makes amends, and has a big party with confetti in icecrown.
So you see, it's a good thing Arthas became the Lich King.

if Arthas wasnt corrupted, The burning legion would have killed the lich king and taken over themselves, or Illidan would have been corrupted, and/or the burning legion would be much more powerful than it already is. or a multitude of other really bad unforeseeable outcomes.
point is, if things get changed in the past via caverns of times and the infinet dragonflight, its almost a guarantee it will change for the worse. I hate to use this reference because i don't particularly like the movie, but think of butterfly effect, at least its concept.

I prefer my clown story to the Hogger one. It has more depth.

I assume you meant 'quote', and I did it... what... once...
Ok, so I put it into a format you would prefer.
Like a buzzard, the moderator sat perched on a dead tree, surveying the barren landscape below, waiting for some hapless wanderer to break the rules. When his moment finally comes, the buzzard will swoop down, and tear apart his prey's flesh...

Now see, that just seems like a bad idea.
