So I've got a few pieces of gear with armor penetration on it and I was wondering how usefull it really is. I understand what it does but does someone know the numbers of how it relates to AP...like 10armor pen = 20 AP or something like that. On all the posts here that I've read its not even a suggested stat so I assume its not worth it at all right?

Armor penetration is pretty weak for all physical DPS classes. Since enhancement shamans get part of their DPS from spells, it's even worse. Try to get items with other stats if possible.

Armor Pen is actually not weak for "all" classes, in fact - in terms of boosting your physical (non-bleed) damage, it's probably the best stat in the game. However, as more of your damage becomes magic damage (not necissarily spells, e.g. FT weapon) or bleeds, Armor Pen becomes less helpful.
Let's compare 100 ArP to 100 hit rating, and to 100 crit rating.
100 ArP is 6.5% reduction in armor. Assuming a boss has 40% mitigation to begin with (10155 armor, drops him to 9495 armor), this would lower his mitigation to 38.4%, which is actually a 2.7% increase in damage taken. At 50% mitigation (15230 armor, thus drops to 14210 armor), this would lower mitigation to 48.26%, or aproxximately 3.5% damage increase. However, I would assume that 40% is probably closer to the exact amount.
100 Hit Rating is 3.05% hit chance. 100 crit rating is 2.18% crit chance. 1% hit should correlate to approximately 1% damage done, whereas 1% crit will be a little more (with talents, we can assume all attacks will be 100% extra on crit, but there are extra procs related with crit - for simplicity we'll just say it's 1% damage, though).
So we have:
Hit: 3.05%
ArP: Approx 2.7% physical damage
Crit: Approx 2.2%, maybe a bit higher
If at least 20% of your DPS is non-physical, then ArP is less valuable than crit. For shamans, I believe way more than 20% is non-physical (e.g. ES, LL, and MW-LB).
However, the reason I made the point that ArP is not weak for all classes is that classes such as a warrior - who is all physical damage - will get a much better effect from it (even though it doesn't buff bleeds, neither does crit).
