Arcane Focus increases spell hit as a whole, for all spells. The tooltip says "Increases your chance to hit" after all.
While the tooltip does say that, it goes on to say "and reduces the mana cost of your Arcane spells by 3%."
Testing has shown that the bold part applies to both the chance to hit and the mana cost reduction, meaning both only apply to Arcane spells and are a 3% increase.
This misconception is a product of the poor wording on the talent's tooltip.
I don't get this. Does this mean that the FAQ is wrong in saying
In PvE at 80, to be hit capped on a raid boss (which are considered lvl 83) a mage must increase his +hit via talents and gear by a total of 17%.
For a mage with no +hit increasing talents, this means a rating of 448 from gear
For a mage with 3/3 Precision, this means a rating of 369 from gear
For an arcane mage with 3/3 Arcane Focus AND 3/3 Precision, this means a rating of 289 from gear

Ok, now once i hit 80 and start farming heroics etc. Arcane or frost? I'm now guessing arcane due to the lower hit requirement (i'm not too fussed about DPS at the moment)?

Pretty much. Frost has better AOE which is nice when everyone is AOE-ing everything in heroics these days, but Arcane is much easier to gear for.

i assumed that frost and arcane have the same gearing mentality in which haste is very good?
