Who does he play with on WoW? Honestly whenever I am strongly addicted to WoW, it is because I am very attached to a group of players, and when my ties with that group break, my interest in WoW quickly disappears. I had been playing WoW for a couple months again, but when the holiday's came around and most of my guild were inactive for long periods of time, I eventually ended up unsubscribing. Perhaps you need to contact his guild members and let them know that his playing is really being detrimental and that they need to encourage him to spend less time in game. Trying to PULL him away from WoW won't work and will likely cause him to become more attached, you need him to push away from it if you want to succeed.

I am concerned with the health of my brother, and I am looking for some sound advice. Crack all the jokes about not having a life that you want, but be advised you will be reported; this is serious business.
He is hearing-impaired, lives with our mother, and is 28 years old. He got totally screwed during his schooling, and his English skills are very poor. About 10 months ago, he lost his job of 5 years because of WoW. His supervisor told him he would be needed to work on Sunday, but his guild's raid schedule interfered. He failed to show up for work and was terminated.
After collecting all the unemployment he could, he now lives his days about as sorrily as one could imagine. He sleeps until 4pm or so, then is logged into WoW by 4:30. He eats once a day and is probably bordering on dehydration. His day ends around 5am. He may shower twice a week.
He has no friends outside the people in his guild (whom he has never truly met). He used to hunt, fish, and play video games at other peoples' houses, but those days are gone. He has a serious problem and is denial of it; he refuses to seek counseling.
I am asking for advice because I believe some in the Wowhead community have either experienced similar problems or know someone who has. If you want to flame and toss insults, please go elsewhere. If you can offer anything that can help him recover, please do.
Thanks in advance.
Advice? Don't come onto a WoW board asking about advice for a WoW addiction. That's like going onto a Pro-Cocaine board and asking for advice to get someone off Cocaine.

...being hearing-impaired myself...
I am not used to a hearing-impaired person being so adept at the use of the English language. His skills, if you saw previously in this thread, rather suck.
But good news! He has signed up for adult education and adult literacy classes (free of charge) through the Department of Job and Family Services. He qualified for extended unemployment benefits, and he applied to several jobs over the last few days. When I first started this thread, I expressed my belief that our Dad would be here for two days in an attempt to straighten my brother out and the whole effort would fail. Well, Dad stayed for quite a few more days and made a REAL difference. I told him I was sorry, but I thought the community should be aware that I was wrong.

Perhaps, my friend, you should seek literacy classes as well.

Really? Is that really what you're going with? 'Cause, I mean, 9 pages of posts trying to help out tends to lead someone to believe that it isn't such a bad place to ask.
But if you're just trying to make a joke, put a "lol" or a "jk" at the end of that to clear up any confusion. Otherwise, it's just kind of insensitive.
Since it's unedited, yeah, that's what I'm going with.
Is righteous indignation what you're going with?
9 pages of a wasted effort are what I see. Think about it. You're trying to get someone off an addiction that they have no interest in getting rid of (from what can be gathered from the OP).
Nope. No trying to make a joke either. Plenty of advice, yet since his brother doesn't want to be helped, it's all wasted. Go ahead and think it's insensitive. Most dislike hearing the truth, and are quick to sling mud at the one saying it.

Imagine losing the ability to fully understand the sounds that the people around you are making. For instance, 'c' and 'z' already sound similar enough. Add the others that sound like them and, if you can't differentiate between each properly, it can lead to some confusion, particularly if there's background noise going on. I can't quite describe what it's like, since it's different for each person depending on the type of hearing loss it is, but I can imagine that if I hadn't learned to enjoy reading at an early age, I might well type something like that. I still have trouble with some words and phrases, since they don't sound right to me, but eh...
But typing like that is not unique to hearing-impaired people. I've seen people in perfect physical health type paragraphs of what seem like nonsense to me, but to them, it makes perfect sense. They wrote it, after all, and know what they meant. I believe one of the best gifts you can give someone is a love of reading. The more you read, the more your vocabulary expands and the more you appreciate the English language, even with all its quirks and nonsense. What amuses me the most about languages is that it's all nonsense sounds. We're simply taught to recognize patterns in those sounds and to form those same patterns.
Congratulations on getting him to go to literacy classes. Keep encouraging him on that front, and next time you get the opportunity, take him to a bookstore and let him choose a few books for you to buy him. Even if they're WoW-related books.

Here's another idea.
(To the rest of WoWhead: This is an extreme-case scenario. I am in no means advertising or encouraging the following.)
If he thinks the game is fun, getting him bored with it can be a way to get him off it. As someone else stated, most gamers dream about being a game master - having unlimited power etc.
My suggestion: Have him create a private server, or create one for him and get him to play it.
This will have 2 effects:
If the first takes place, he will learn more about how the coding works and maybe get interested in the technical parts of the game.
I know for a fact that people get bored while playing in 'hi power' mode. If he spends 2 or 3 days playing as a GM with full T7 etc, chances are he'll get very bored with the game and seek other challenges. This would be the time to try and introduce him to more physical activities: I know for a fact that running in free air is likely to improve general mood/physical condition.
Just my two cents, and best of luck with him.
