No, you do not need or want strength. Survival doesn't want strength either.

Per my understanding
For every point of Str. You get +1 attack to your melee attack power.
For every point of Agl. You get +1 attack to your melee attack power and +2 to your range attack and it increase the chance of a critical strike.
So if I had to pick between and Item +10 Agl or +10 Str.. it's a no brainier +10 Agl wins. Where to draw the line on mismatched equipment? Like +11 Agl Vs +20 Str then I'd say +20 Str wins out, but not by much and maybe only for BG & other pvp play were you're going to get close.
(i could be wrong)

1 str = 1 melee AP
1 agi = 1 melee AP, 1 ranged AP*, 0.025% physical crit, 2 armor, 0.04% dodge
Quite obvious which one is better...
Having some strength isn't dangerous but you'll still want to avoid it as it's pretty much useless. There's a reason none of the hunter sets have strength on them.
* Dominous, is used to be 2 rAP / 1 agi but that was nerfed ages ago.

if you plan on being a good hunter, go all out w/ Agil and Stam. If you're a good hunter, you wont do any meleeing except wing clip, and counterattack if your survival. to be a good hunter, you have to learn how to kite. KITE like a bitch, never get serious into melee unless it is your LAST LAST LAST resort. even then its good to throw a freeze trap and finish the crippled guy off w/ a quick barrage.
