Tolkien made some amazing books. I liked The Hobbit, but when I got the Lord of the Rings Trilogy i went nuts. Read all three of the books in like 2 days. Some amazing stuff.

However, as Iralima posted, his writing style is overly descriptive.
You think Tolkien is over descriptive? I'm guessing you've never read The Wheel of Time series . . .

It took me three tries at three different times to finally work up the will to read the Quenta Silmarillion from cover to cover.
And it was Epic.
I also read the LotR trilogy again this past summer and I found after reading it a second time, years later, that it seemed as though all the characters felt very "proper english gentleman". It was strange.

Yeah, I got my copy of it in 7th grade and didn't get around to reading it until about three years later though. It's probably my favorite book ever... right up there with LotR and The Iliad :)

The Silmarillion was hard to read because it was not written by our man, it was NOT written by J.R.R Tolkien, but it was taken from his letters and his son saw the need to put it all together into a book,
Furthermore, I am sorry to say this, but he did NOT create his own language, he taught Old English, maybe Middle (i cannot remember the exact one(s) but he took those and made up the Elvish we know now.
I read those books in 4th grade the Hobbit and LotR, iam in 12th now, and i still love them. I remember seeing the first movie, and as we were walking out a young girl asked her grandmother, what the idea of hte Hobbit was, and the lady said it was LorR for kids
I almost died
And my dad heard about my QQing on the stupidity of the general public for the rest of the day, my dad is a great guy for not duffing me..
My dad introduced me to the world of Tolkien one day at the book store in December of 2001. He now regrets is. (by the way I read the hobbit before I was even aware of the LOTR movies, even though I think they had just come out by then).

My wife has a tattoo of Smaug on her wrist.
That's kind of cool. :)
