Lawl @ people who think our votes actually count.
Electoral Votes are better than ours!
Goverment class FTW!
Do you have any idea HOW the US political system works?
Each state gets a certain # of electoral votes. The popular vote in the state determines how that state uses it's electoral votes. If X state has 30000 votes for Candidate A and 70000 votes for Candidate B, and the state has 10 electoral votes then 3 go to Candidate A and 7 go to Candidate B. The # of votes a state gets is relative to it's population, like the Congress.
So candidates are more likely to go after larger states like California, Florida, New York, and Texas, over small states(Population wise) like Rhode Island, Maine, or Alaska. So yes, candidate A might win in more states, but if candidate B carries the large states, then B will more likely win.

Ok, that is true, but that are gonna be some pretty unpopular and out of office politicians if they do something too stupid.

Do you?
Your example suggests that you are from Maine or Nebraska, or that you don't.
The remaining 48 States and the District of Columbia have winner take all races, where winning by one vote wins the whole State. By having winner takes all contests, each vote does count, as a Candidate can win by just one vote.
True, it rarely happens that a Candidate wins by only one vote. That is why in addition to voting, you should let your preferences be known. You should campaign for the candidate you support. Even if you don't go out and wave signs or use other obvious methods of campaigning, you should be engaging your coworkers and friends in discussions about why you support your candidate and why they should too. By doing this you can turn your one vote into many votes.
Anyway, enough Stumping for me :P
My bad. Sorry about that. Listen to Gukhwa, he's smarter than me.

It can be strange to hear the winner declared before some states have even 25% of their votes counted.
Yeah, it's mostly exit poll data, but it's so overwhelmingly in Obama's favor they didn't have to wait... Even though a few states haven't declared a clear winner yet (# of votes are to close). I mean it's obvious Obama won the election, so there was no point in holding off on saying which state went Blue or Red, but I agree, for it to be very accurate, they have to wait a week or two before announcing, and then a month or so before the Electoral College actually meets and all.
