I have a better riddle.
How do you turn 9 into six by adding/removing a single letter, number, or by drawing a line?
You guys have yet to solve this.

My stomach divides by zero, the truth!
As for that ridiculous question, someone already answered it but:
a*a = ab, therefore a^2 - ab = 0
therefore 2(0) = 1(0) --> 0 = 0
or 2(a^2 - ab) = 1(a^2 - ab)
let (a^2 - ab) = x
2x = 1x
2x - 1x = 0
x = 0
or in the OP's perspective,
2x/x = 1x/x
or 2(0/0) = 1(0/0)
or 2*undefined = 1*undefined

The dollar didn't go anywhere. Its just an abuse of the inability to divide 5 by three, when 30 can be divided such. It APPEARS as though there is a dollar missing when in fact there isn't because the entire original amount of money wasn't used as a refund, only the $5 brought as change. Ergo, you're comparing what amounts to apples and oranges, considering the 30 originally compiled is not the 5 given back, so there is a mathematical error when attempting to factor the $5 by 3, assuming the entire $30 exists (which it doesn't), giving the illusion of the missing $1.
And probably I blew a hole in my own argument with a logical fallacy, but it's midnight my time and I've thus been up for almost 20 hour....zzzz...

3 guys are on a road trip. Its late, so they decide to crsh for the night and they see a motel. Its 30 dollars for a room so they each pitch in 10 dollars and head to the room.
The manager calls the attendant over and tells him that since its Wednesday, the room was really 25 dollars so he has to go and give the guys their change.
The attendant is walking to the room with 5 singles and figures since the guys cant split the 5 dollars evenly, he will do them a favor and pocket 2 dollars and give them 3 dollars back.
The attendant stops and realizes that if he gives each guy back one dollar it means that they have each paid 9 dollars.
3x9=27 dollars, but the attendant only has 2 dollars in his pocket making 29 total.
What happened to the other dollar?
Oldie but a goodie.
The problem is in the wording of the question. Originally, each man paid $10 each. The attendant is asked to reduce their cost by $5 total. The bolded statement is the false one - each man actually paid ~8.333 dollars. ~8.333 x 3 = 25. Adding in the three dollars returned to the customers gives you $28, plus the $2 in the attendant's pocket = $30.

a = b.
a² = ab
a² + a² = a² + ab
2a² = a² + ab
2a² - 2ab = a² + ab - 2ab
2a² - 2ab = a² + ab - 2ab
2(a² - ab) = 1(a² - ab)
Cancel the (a² - ab)
Leaving you with 2=1
Where is the Error :)
not too sure if this has been spotted, but (a² - ab) = Zero
ah.. this has been corrected.. i was too late

As Avallen said oldie but a goodie, but his reasoning is a touch off too. Once each man gets their dollar back, they have in fact paid exactly 9 dollars each.
Eh, it's really the same thing.
For the total to equal $25, each must have, in essence, paid ~8.333. In order to alleviate this, the attendant changes the cost to $27, making each pay $9 and he keeps $2. Each gets a dollar back, equaling $30.
Just a different way of looking at it.

Actually, if each person paid 8.333(repeater) then they never actually paid $30.
They paid $8.999999999 etc
That poor ole hotel manager, he got ripped off!
No, they each paid ~8.333. In total, that would be $25. (3*~8.333)

I have another one
6 + 6 + 20 = 666
Add one line, number, or symbol to fix this problem. You cannot, however, cross out the equal sign.
