I'm on the side of they should be dropping something realistic. The thing that bothers me more than anything is how only some mobs drops a certain hide needed for a quest or not all mobs have ears or eyes that are needed for a quest.

I feel the need to chime in -
1 - I have always assumed that the reasons a mob doesn't drop a buzzard big toe every time (for example) is because its possible that it was damaged during combat. sure - it had a big toe before you slashed it, fire balled it, or just basically mashed the hell out of it.
2 - I think that (aside from the really Large items) I have always assumed that when a boar drops a dagger, its because it consumed it at some previous time. after you kill it, its guts are all over the ground, and Look - something Shiny....
3 - as for type specific items dropped (cloth from a caster, etc) well - we cant Unmake robes into raw cloth, so we would only have the items the Mob is "carrying" - most times un-bound items, loose cloth, food, and coin. we would get the items they used against us, but they are most likely soul bound...
Realism is where you find it - expand what you are seeing on the screen and use your imaginations, and all becomes very cool...
Just my thoughts.

... These piles can be pretty sparse, so in the end you will be running over lots and lots of dirt before you can find some dirt.
Realism? I think not.
Realism is where you find it
There are different kind of soils. Maybe the kind you're after is a rare kind, that comes in neat piles throughout the zone. :)
Besides, it is a fantasy game, what would be the point of role-play if you are going to obide by the same rules as 'reality'?
Now they just need to implement gardening... and a money tree!

This is a stupid complaint to have, go find a better use for this energy.
Seriously, with all that is wrong about the game
this
concerns you?
Talk about a waste of energy...

When I want Golden and Black Labrador Ears, Beagle Ears just won't do. And, as has been pointed out, they have to be in usable condition after all the slicing, stabbing, crushing, burning, freezing, poisoning, etc. that you've been doing to collect them.
Sounds reasonable to me.

Realism in a game where you can become impervious to even fire or a boss smashing your head in with a block of ice?
THSI IS BLASPHEMY! THIS IS MADNESS!
