Prot warrior having low avoidance?

I've got a question. As a protection specced warrior, I've heard that gemming for raw stamina is a huge boost to your tanking ability just because of how much effective health you'll have? ("It's not about how little damage you take, it's about how MUCH damage you can take").

Here's my armory link. When I look at my %'s for avoidance stats (block / parry / dodge) i just feel like theyre pretty low, while my health on the other hand seems pretty decent. Can I get your opinions on my character? Any constructive criticism would help a ton.
Thanks. :D

Well, it looks okay, but you can afford to focus more on avoidance than stamina when upgrading items from now on. Don't switch to avoidance gems unless you get an exceptional socket bonus, but I suppose you could swap one or two enchants - primarily the cloak and chest enchant (to 12 def/dodge and 15 defense respectively).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you were supposed to stay as close to 490 defense as possible?
If thats true, why would I go and enchant my cloak / chest with more defense?
I can understand enchanting my cloak with dodge.. I actually replaced the dodge with armor, hearing it was better. I think I'm probably going to be going back to the 12 dodge though.
Thoughts on the defense for a warrior though? I'm kinda confused now.

No, you need AT LEAST 490 defense for uncrittability.
The more, the better, but after 490, you can stop focusing on Defense since you will be uncrittable.
After the this, you still receive the parry/block/dodge from Defense, but imo, its better to focus on the specific ratings. Anyone correct me if im wrong here.

18.92 dodge rating = 1% dodge
19.75 defense rating = 0.33% each to dodge, parry, and miss (1% avoidance) and 0.33% chance to block as well
23.65 parry rating = 1% parry (and the sped up swing bonus)
30 Agility = 1% dodge (and 0.91% crit)
7.88 block rating = 1% block (note: this is NOT avoidance)
So to the above poster, dodge rating > defense rating >> parry rating.
So 12 dodge rating is 0.63% avoidance, and 12 defense rating is 0.61% avoidance with 0.20% chance to block and the crit protection. You might as well get the steelweave enchant for cloak instead of the dodge enchant.
And oh how I hate the "defense cap" term. 490 is a minimum, not a maximum.

120 armor on cloak is a good enchant, but if you want a bit more avoidance instead of effective health, then it is one of the places you can get it. As the others have said, 490 defense is a
minimum
, not a cap. It really depends what you're after.
In many cases, it works better to focus on effective health for progression tanking, but there are exceptions.
