Unfortunately, that's not possible.
I guess you could try running the game in window mode (maximized or not), it would allow you to probably alt-tab a bit faster.
It is possible. You just have to create a directx overlay application that has a web browser in it. It would work just like xfire or steams in-game friends list, just with a web browser. I know for a fact they exist, I just can't think of it off the top of my head.
But running WoW in windowed mode reduces performance. If the OP's on a low end computer, this is a mistake.
Cerobug, fork out $20 and upgrade your computer to a gig or more of RAM (
http://newegg.com
). It's a surprisingly big performance upgrade that can come relatively cheap, especially when it comes to tabbing out of the game and opening low-intensity applications (which should be flawless and smooth with enough RAM).
To check which type of RAM to buy, see
http://crucial.com/systemscanner/
. Under your computer specifications, pay attention to the RAM type (DDR, DDR2, DDR3) and the supported speeds (PC2700, PC3200, ...) in the left box, and the maximum RAM capacity in the right box. Don't buy something that won't work, or will waste money on you.
It's not just ram, it's graphics card as well. Running in windowed mode forces your card to both render your desktop AND the game client (even if the game client takes up the whole screen). This is the reason alt-tabing takes a long time in fullscreen mode. The os has to switch to rendering the desktop again, which takes time. Running in windowed mode speeds this process up because the OS never stops rendering the desktop XD

I wasn't saying you were incorrect nef, just clarifying as to why alt-tabing in windowed mode is faster. When you run directx/opengl applications in "full-screen mode" they litterally tell background video processes to stop rendering. This is why if you have a window set to always on top and run a fullscreen game the window will not be on top, but if you run in windowed mode it will. Just clarifying is all, I agree with you completely that the performance hit is rather substantial if you're on a low end system XD

PlayXpert
is one program, which adds an overlay to any direct3d game (like wow) and features IM, music player, web browser and other stuff. Unfortunately Vista is not supported yet. If you have windows XP it should work fine. Dunno if it takes a lot of resources though.

... I seem to be having some troubles while running fullscreen in vista ...
Like I said, they don't fully support vista atm. They are working on it though.

Nefarion is right. Even on a dual-core processor, this program is extremely slow to load. Besides, I can't surf the net without AdBlockPlus, and I don't see PlayXpert getting an anti-ad upgrade anytime soon. So I'm just going to stick with Firefox and Alt-Tabbing for now.
You could get around not having adblock by using an ip filtering client (such as peerguardian) and using a couple of ad filter lists. That, of course, doesn't get around the inherent performance issues the program has however.

There I was thinking PlayXpert would be the end to alt tabbing.. oh well.
Just wait a few weeks and it will work on vista too ^^

There was one that was hooked into the the Help frame, but it was patched so it doesn't work anymore. Beyond that, people have used just a regular browser with a transparent overlay and always on top option.
