if i was playing a mage with your spec on aoe pulls....
i would wait till the mobs were below 75% health (from other mages and locks doing aoe), then i would cast a flamestrike, followed by a dragon's breath, cone of cold, blastwave, and a frost nova. then i would step out of the mobs' melee range where i can safely spam AE till they're dead. not recommended if you dont have salv but thats not the case in raids. If you got a LOT of crits with the flamestrike, CoC, dragon's breath and blastwave, then you MIGHT pull aggro, but if you are patient enough on pulls, you should only pull aggro when the mobs are near death, if not already dead.
75% is just a random number, if the tanks are good or you have a pally tank, you can start at 80-85%. if the tanks suck, it might be safer to wait till around 60%
if you die after an aoe pull, take note of what percentage of health the mobs were at when you started aoeing, and next time, wait an extra 5% or so.
oh yea, ice armor helps immensely :] and dont forget you have ice block/blink to help you survive also
if that's not working out good for ya, then just AE spam, since you have -40% threat from arcane subtlety, the rest of the aoe classes should be dishing out more threat than you, especially warlocks and their seeds. you'd be safest that way

Dragon's breath and cone of cold share a cooldown.

Dragon's breath and cone of cold share a cooldown.
thanks for pointing that out, i'm not a deep fire mage :D, but i use the exact same rotation, without dragon's breath and blast wave (i'm 43/18 arcane/fire)
flamestrike --> CoC --> frost nova --> AE spam

I'm sorry, but... are you sure you ever played a Mage?
If I EVER see a Mage waiting until the mobs drop to 80~85% before he starts AoEing, I'll make sure before he gets removed from the raid before he even starts AoEing.
If I EVER see a Mage using Ice Armor in raids, I'll make sure he gets guild kicked immediately.
If I EVER see a Mage using Frost Nova on mobgroups tanked by a Paladin, I'll spend the following weeks/months trying to figure out his password so I can delete his Mage.
Ice Block and Blink are useless on MH Trash if you're AE spamming, since they one-hit kill you. (Yes, even with Ice Armor.)
Frost Novaing Pala-tanked mobs means you (and the melee DPS around you) gets smacked as soon as the paladin takes a step in the other direction.
Please sir, I mean no disrespect, but I must ask you to never log on to your Mage again...
-first point, if i start aoeing at 90%, and i die early because they didnt get that many hits on the pally tank yet, then i'm doing 0 aoe dmg for the rest of the, oh i dont know, 60-70% health, AND i would require rebuffs and a rez. healers would always prefer to heal the pally for a few seconds longer than to rez a dead mage who aoe'd too early.
-second point, i have the habit of using ice armor on aoe pulls mainly because of 5/10 mans (where you CAN take a few hits before you die). yes i realize you get 1 shotted if you were hit in hyjal. so fine, always use molten armor in raids. i didn't mean to say use ice armor in hyjal.
-third point, if you frost nova the mobs, and the pally does not move, they will continue to be in melee range and therefore hit the pally, continuing to build threat. and with all the aoe happening at the same time the frost nova doesnt root for much longer than a second or two anyway. its just a safety precaution. it may not do much in hyjal but it certain doesnt harm. we have one frost mage in our raid with improved blizzard (slows them enough that they dont move much from the pally) and shatter, so he's constantly breaking my FN in aoe pulls anyway (and i'm helping his blizzard ticks crit). besides, my post were only suggestions, and if the OP finds that frost nova doesnt work for him, then he can take it out of his rotation. no one ever said there is only one single almighty rotation for aoeing.
i dont seem to see what the point of the flame is. no offense to you either, but i can probably play a mage just as well as you can.
it seems like you're one of those GMs who require all classes to use cookie cutter specs, no exceptions. all i can say is i'm VERY GLAD i'm not in your guild =)
The only time I have EVER used FN with a pally tank was if I pulled aggro (the only time being is when I jump the gun and start AOE too soon.. which I've done it kara a few times). FN them in the consecrate and blink, watch threat until tank has it again and start over. Sometimes it doesn't work cause the consecrate will break the CC from FN, but for the most part, it works.
yes, but this can also be avoided by simply waiting an extra 5 seconds per aoe pull. works literally every time.
