As for the first part of your post, Chronoblivion, it makes sense why the mage would do that. From what I understand, that buff stacks with AI and you can consistently keep the buff up. Meaning more raid buffs. Who knows if the warlock will get to 70, or even start raiding?

Was in heroic UB when the pattern for cobrascale hood dropped, i rolled but then a dps warrior rolled need i was like 'wtf are u even a LW'. Then he says, 'no, but that will sell for 3kg+' me and my grp went mad at him, luckily i won the roll and kicked him aswell. His dps was crap aswell was below me(tank) and wouldn't follo instructions.
Also got my whole guild to stick him on ignore and explained stroy in trade channel to get him ignored by as many ppl as possible.

Everyone should have a chance to roll for that.

Alot of the times it's an understood rule that if one of your party needs the pattern to complement their profession, if you send them a whisper and be like 'Hey, I was in your party when you got such and such recipe/pattern" I was tempted to roll on it, but I knew you would like it for your professions, could I possibly get one of such and such made?" Usually they will be nice and give you one, if you just want the pattern to be greedy then well imagine if you had the profession. Would you want EVERYONE rolling on something you could benefit or help others benefit from?
If the above answer is "Yes" then my god, hats off to you. You are a rare person sir.
(That was not sarcasm thats the honest to god truth.)
I don't think that's so strange. I'm a JC but when JC patterns drop on my daily H MgT run I just have everybody greed. The way I see it is that if Blizzard had wanted it that way they just would've made those recipes BoP and not visible to people who already have the recipe or don't have the profession. As it is, to me they're just large sacks of gold that happen to also teach a skill if you're a JC.
This works in reverse too, however. "I need that primal nether for (insert crafted item)" doesn't fly with me. Neither does "I'm making a Darkmoon Faire deck and this card fits it." You can greed roll like everybody else or need and be on the ninja list. If you really want it and somebody else happens to win the roll, if you're nice people tend to sell it at a discount knowing they've already got an interested party right there in their group.

The JC patterns I mentioned are BoE, everybody can see and roll on them. I think we're talking about the same thing here. But who cares, bourbon! Woo!

So many kinds of ninja: the evil ninja, malicious ninja, accidental ninja... My story is about the retributive ninja!
So last year we are farming the Headless Horseman when
The Horseman's Signet Ring
drops. The mage and warlock are very excited and both roll need on what was a huge upgrade for either of them.
The warrior (from another guild where they do things differently I'd guess) freaks out about 'need' rolls that weren't vetted and approved by the whole group... and then decides to punish us by rolling need on the
Swift Magic Broom
after
the rest of us rolled Greed.
Poor me. Two more days of farming and all I was ever able to get was an
Old Magic Broom
.
