Temporary buffs affect the spells that are cast while they are active.
For example, if you had a poppable trinket that gave you an extra 150 spell damage when you used it, it would affect any of your spells cast during that period. Dots that ran beyond that period of time would retain the bonus. Dots that were cast before the bonus was gained would not be altered.

That's just part of the mechanics of things, dots do more damage but take a long time to do so. Even though you got all 5 dots off during the bonus time and then spammed SB's for the remainder itll take the guy dying after an additional 10 secs for the bonus on the dots to take affect and so its only really affecting bosses all that much since only they shud still be up after that length of time.

I just wanted to be sure, since it seems bit overpowered for affliction locks - in 10-15s I with extra buff I can cast all dots I have and deal much more extra damage thanks to that, than any other class in game (especially that most dots take more than 100% from spell damage)
Edit: bit of typos
I play both mage and lock (and druid if you ask). And no, its not another "mage vs lock" or "nerf locks!" thread, I just stated (maybe not precisely enough) that aff locks can get insane DPS boost from simple trinket comparing to i.e. demo or destro ones (at least thats what I think maybe I'm wrong here). All I just wanted to be sure about mechanic.
Thank you for your hospitality Afilo.
yes this really is no flame or mage vs lock or nerf locks thread what so ever
i really misjudged you man, it's completely justified to say the following things and don't intend to say 'nerf locks':
- overpowered for affliction locks
- much more extra damage thanks to that, than any other class
- aff locks can get insane DPS boost from simple trinket comparing to ...
it clearly shows you were only interested in the mechanic, it really does!

So why is your conclusion then that he's a mage?

if you look at where he has posted before and what he has posted it's clear to see he's a mage, futhermore he confirmed it...
your point in asking it?

Yeah, I do play mage as I admitted (and once again, a lock and druid... and few other classes) and I was posting at mage forum, does it mean that I cannot post here? Atm I'm enjoying playing warlock and just want to know a bit more about mechanics. If you could dig deeper you would find that I also posted on warrior and druid forums. Also, if you want to quote (especially from my second post when I was clarifying the what I really had in mind) please quote in full:
that aff locks can get insane DPS boost from simple trinket comparing to i.e.
demo or destro ones
(just to make sure: by "demo" I mean "demonology specced
warlocks
" by "destro" destruction specced
warlocks
).
Not a word about mages. Not a word about nerfing. Words "overpowered" and "insane" I used as
hyperbole
.
I was simply wondering how does mechanic work, nothing much. But for you it seems everything is about "we vs them".
Thank you Dunsinane and Nefarion for answering my question.
I couldn't have said it any better :) That's why I asked my question

if you really were interested in the mechanic you wouldn't have brought up any class or specc into the discussion...
if you were only interested in the mechanic you would have made it in general and not in the warlock section...
if you don't intend to call for a QQ or nerf or something you wouldn't have said those 3 lines i quoted...
and i quote how i like mister... ofc i won't change anything, just use the parts i'm going into with my reply...
