Note: my WoW account has been on hold since March so it's been a while since I played - will probably start again around October.

I've dps'd Kara and come out at #1 before, so I feel like I should just skip it (esp. since there doesn't seem to be anything of use to ret pallies except Gorehowl).
I'm wondering what the highest level raid is that I'm equipped to adequately dps for, and which gear I should focus on upgrading first. Any thoughts/advice?

Yeah agree on the cloak and the gemming, those definitely need to be upgraded. I'm thinking the badge cloaks will do.
I wasn't even contemplating stepping into SSC/TK, was thinking more along the lines of gruul's... maybe mag? I don't think I'm ready for those yet either, need better gear for sure... welfare epics because honestly, I'm a working guy and I can't afford to spend 8 hours a day raiding - so, these had to do.
But thanks for the advice; I think I'll just wait 'til Wrath anyway, then gear according to our new talents.

Out of curiosity, how does one top a raid DPS chart with only 74 hit rating? That's not even hit-capped against level 70 targets.

I love this comment, because I hear it so often as justification as an "im clearly better than you because I work 8 hours a day".
News flash... Most people that play WoW are hard working individuals who put in their 40-50 hour work weeks. You clearly spent time grindign out that honor which IMHO could have been better spent doing kara, farming for your red belt of battle, doing heroics for badge gear etc.
As for me personally, I work 40 hours a week, and provide a good life for my wife, myself and our new baby on the way.
Whoa, easy there tough guy. Why so serious? Do you feel insulted by me saying that I don't enough time to raid? If it makes any difference, I didn't mean in a superior, 'I'm an adult and don't have all day for this kid stuff' way.
If you're at a job where you work 40hrs/week and therefore have time for raiding, that's great. In some ways, I envy you. But if you're like me, and work something more like 70-80 hours a week, it becomes much harder to find a solid 8 hours that you need to raid. And believe me, I've tried. I've wasted more hours than I care to think about trying to raid kara, either with a guild or in a pug, and after the 10th time that we got a useless pug or my guild mates couldn't log on in time, I got sick of it.
WIth pvp, you can spend an hour or two at a time and be able to finish a couple of BGs. It's a reliable and efficient way to gear up (even though it's clearly not ideal, and I recognize that). Heroics is the other option, but again, getting a pug together sometimes just takes too long. And finally, I actually really enjoy AV, which is why I prefer it to heroics.
Anyway, no need to get on your high horse or feel offended by my saying I don't have a lot of time to raid. It sounds like you're taking it as a personal affront or something. It's not, I'm simply stating a fact.

I've no idea... there's quite a few undead/demon mobs in kara so that helps.
Maybe it says something about the raid I was in? >.>

Who the heck are you raiding with, that it requires 8 hours at a time? I'm not sure how it works if you're in SK-Gaming or Nihilum, but in the casual raider category (which is most players), 2-3 hours is the most you can expect anyone to set aside for a raid, which is basically a 1/2 clear of Kara.
No one raids 8 hours a night, or even 8 hours at a time. That's the sort of misconception that is generally perpetuation by players who aren't raiding at all.

You clearly have not looked into the available badge rewards. In many cases badge items are superior to some of the tier 5 set items (from SSC and the Eye) and Karazhan is usually the easiest place to obtain a large number of badges.

His hits not to big a deal.
I beg to differ. Hit capped means you never miss. If you're attacking from behind, the only swings that won't cause damage are dodges. Removing the miss chance from the attack table will increase your DPS significantly.

In my (admittedly limited) kara raiding experience, it's taken anywhere from 7-10 hours total to clear, depending on bosses skipped. That, plus the way that my guild's timings worked out, weekends were the only times that I could get into raids, which meant 4-6 hours Sat and Sun for raiding. Yes, our guild wasn't very experienced, which is why it took so long.
But anyway, hopefully that explains my question - to me Kara is only good for a couple of items (Arathi Kings cloak, Gorehowl) and badges. I'm just wondering how much of a gear upgrade I need before I can dps Gruul's. Hit rating is obviously an issue, and I need to get better gems/cloak. Not sure where to focus first though, i.e. what piece to prioritize for upgrading. Maybe just run Kara and heroics and get badge gear? Again, looking for suggestions here (constructive ones, lol).

I've actually noticed some of the beautiful badge gear, which is why I said heroics is an obvious choice to gear up also. Only a couple of items caught my eye though: Dory's Embrace and the Amani Mask of Death. Maybe some leg gear also, but that's about it right? Would appreciate it if you linked which badge gear you're thinking of aside from the ones I've mentioned.
