Seriously he (or whatever it is) doesn't have a leg to stand on an mentions why himself when he says he has been killing "innocent" mobs for years to get their loot. This really is no different. Day in and day out you kill "monsters" and if you are a pvp server you kill other "people" there really is no difference. Not to mention that thanks to Blizzard and some of the gathering quests you more or less have to commit genocide before the item you have to collect drops.
... there are plenty of other places to go level, away from the starting zone
There might not be, from what I have been told you have to do (a) quest line(s) to unlock stuff and get released from the Lich Kings grasp.

When I leveled my horde character to see what it was like there were a number of quests I skipped. Poisoning the farmers dog for example. To the best of my knowledge, admittedly not-encyclopedic, there are no quests on the alliance side that require the torture of non-combatants. The issue of course is that if one wants to play the first "hero class" in WoW, one must play an evil character. In that sense, if the player finds the quests too offensive to complete, the player has no choice other than to forgo the class.

It's quite interesting to consider that we'll be playing for the big baddie, albeit for a short time.
I'll admit, despite my typical desensitization toward violence, the idea of having to torture and murder does not sit easily, even though this is simply a computer game. However, I'm curious to see how Blizzard pulls it off. If they do it in a suitable fashion, truly showcasing what it means to choose this class, I think it will provide for a very satisfying game experience.
Honestly, who hasn't gotten bored sometimes of simply being the conquering hero? Think about figures like Batman, who are decidedly dark, have less than pristine pasts, and have done things not in line with morality.
It's one thing to be the valiant Paladin, smashing evil left and right for good and justice; it is quite another to have a little darkness of your own and do the same.
Plus, they look badass. Can't wait to roll mine and give it a go.

- The quest where I am forced to murder civilians who don't fight back.
- The quest where I am forced to murder my unarmed friend
OMG Easy mode quests! :D
If you havent realised already, you slaughter thousands of people to grow up 'levels' in the game, be glad they are making them more easy :P

The following is a scenario where the OP has decided to play Dungeons and Dragons with some of his friends -
DM: You are a death knight, one of Arthas' elite warriors bent on destruction of humanit---
OP: Imma kill Arthas! He hurts bunnahs!
DM: You can't, you're under the control of Arthas, and he has tasked you with the elimination of the mortal races.
OP: I lub gnomes tho.
DM: .... You're an idiot.
