Leveling beyond a zone

My main character has been questing in Outland, but is now at level 72 and I noticed the quests are yielding far fewer XP. I just read that Outland was intended for 60-69 levels, and Northrend is for 70-79.
Should I give up on Outland and send him to Northrend? I have lower level alts (a 59 and a 62), so I can finish the Outland storylines with them, but will my main be at any disadvantage for not having finished Outland quests, or gaining enough rep with the various factions there?

Are you in a rush to the end of the game? If not, complete it. If you are in a rush, move on.
For the rep grind though, it's always better to come back at max level to finish it off.

If you decide to move on to zones that give you appropriate XP, then come back at max level to complete quests, you might find quests that require you to beat down, but not kill mobs. There aren't many of those quests, but they do exist.
In which case, there is a handy toy just for the purpose:
Soft Foam Sword

There is no reason to stay in Outland. It's horrible.
Just move on to Northrend and get better gear there.

There's no reason to remain in a zone beyond its level cap if you're focusing on leveling. You can always return later, at max level, and blast through that content, if you're interested in loremaster or completion.
You're not putting yourself at any disadvantages though, that's for sure. Even if you did do 100% of Outland, you're only going to be sitting on honored with most of the reputations there. So it's a minimal gain at best. But either way, you're not gaining anything valuable for playing at endgame in the early content.

Thanks everybody. I've decided to give my main a rest, let the alts explore Outland more to finish exploring it and learn the lore. When I return to my main, I'll probably move on to Northrend.

Also, coming in patch 7.3.5 we apparently are getting an overhaul of the quest progression for entire continents. Outland and Northrend are both going to be levels 60-80, Pandaria and the Cataclysm zones are going to be 80-90, with no changes to WoD or Legion zones. I have heard rumours that Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor will be reworked as well, but I don't have details.
Next time you level an alt, you will get choices, and we won't even have to wait for the Battle for Azeroth expansion!

It's getting the same slider that Legion has as in the quests are always your level no matter what zone you are in...which is kinda dumb, but then again, most people LFD through leveling now so hey, whatever.

I think Ive read that the EK and Kalimdor will mostly scale from the lowest level for that zone up to 60 max.
That will certainly make me consider leveling up another character IF the experience required per level increase isnt absurd as Ive heard it could be.
