Hey guys,
I quit playing WoW 6 years ago. Back then I really enjoyed the game but I thought it was time for something new. Now I am seriously thinking of joining again but I am afraid that the game changed too much.
Here I have some questions to see if this is the case:
- Can someone give me some examples of major changes in the game?
- I read that you have to choose a specialisation nowadays, does this mean that for example: if you are a frost mage you cannot use any arcane attacks (like arcane explosion)
- Is the old world (Azeroth) still the same? The instances, the quests etc.
Thanks a lot!
Chris

Yes, that is correct. Each spec has its own identity. Azeroth has changed over 6 years. Its been destroyed by deathwing and most of it is repaired now however... RIP Thousand Needles

but can you give me more detailed information on my questions?
The isntances are still the same?
As a frost mage it is impossible to perform fire/arcane attacks?
Quests still the same?
What are the major differences if i start playing now?

There have been three expansions in six years. MoP, WoD, and Legion. Azeroth has vastly changed in that time, though you'll still find plenty of familiar content. Even so, quest lines have changed or been obliterated. As for your question about frost/arcane, I don't really know for sure, but I do know specializations have changed significantly in the past six years.

Each spec has it's own identity, which means that frost uses frost spells and can't use anything other. So no, you can't use arcane attacks in frost.

There's
some
overlap. I haven't played a mage in a while, but for a druid, all of the specs get Moonfire, some utilities, some healing spells, and a couple basic attacks for each of the shapeshift forms, and there's a few talents that all of the specs get (though often each spec gets a few different benefits from the talent). However, most of the primary attacks for each spec are unique to that spec.
