Is Ret Aura affected by spell damage? I have a whopping +5 bonus spell dam right now at 60, picked up a lot of warrior gear.

My weapon is

for right now. Had a 70 pally healer friend go with me to Ramps and I got all the plate drops on the first run.
Back on subject, so other than my consecration what is spell damage affecting?

Ok thanks, now I think I got it.
I just respec'd from Ret and a few things like SoC and Crusader Strike were physical so I was a bit confused.

for a paladin tank.. all your gear should be warrior type gear, and your weapon should be a spell damage mace..
Maybe pre-BC, but there is gear designed for paladin tanks and gear designed for warrior tanks. Although some of it overlaps, you will find yourself lacking intellect and spell damage if you only itemize warrior gear.

And you'd find yourself keeping the taunt on CD as you'd never hold anything with just the spell damage from a weapon.

I've tanked Kara with 80 spell damage :P
(King's Defender + 40 spell damage + Superior Wizard Oil)
On a more serious note, spell damage also effects Avenger's Shield

You should gear in general plate tanking gear when possible - warrior gear is in my eyes the pieces with strength on them. Hit rating and expertise also scream "WARRIOR" when I see them.
Not saying you should gear in D3/T4 because it's paladin gear. But try to avoid items with points wasted in strength.

At 70, when you're gearing for heroics and raids, this is correct. Leveling in outlands there is a ton of quest reward gear (and lots of drops) that have good spell damage and intellect bonuses, which you will need for general purpose questing and tanking instances.
Gearing as Freddy suggests prior to 70 means being OOM all the time when questing, which makes the already long level grind take even longer.
