As for Gladiator's Shield Wall vs. Dawnforged Defender - They certainly both have merit, and have topped my list, but I believe I'll be keeping the PvP Shield on top. My logic behind this being, tanks whom are gearing up pre-kara are likely to need help reaching crit immunity and raising their effective health, as opposed to building threat stats (SBV and Hit) and picking up avoidance. I imagine that many will go for the Dawnforged Defender regardless, as its easier to get (arguably).
Thank you for your kind response, I'm glad to contribute what little I can to your already exemplary guide.
I had more or less forgotten by the time I got into the shield discussion that your guide was aimed at warriors right on the cusp of entering Karazhan, and considering that, it makes perfect sense to have the shields arranged as you do. Crit immunity is probably the most important part of a tanking setup, and is definitely not an area that can be neglected under any circumstances I can think of.
I would still suggest switching to the
Dawnforged
as soon as one reaches the 490 mark. Another point you touched on was the ease of access -- SSO rep is certainly the easiest and most lucrative rep grind I have encountered, and it gives a great
threat neck
to boot (save
35 badges
).
The
PVP shield
, while not a
terrible
grind, still involves a fair amount of honor and BG marks -- not typically a lot of fun as a prot warrior. I think I got mine in about three days, if memory serves, but it was painstaking. I was happy to have it earlier this evening though, when I realized an addition to my fire resist set had dropped me to 485 defense.
I'm sure many people are already familiar with this, but since this is where I discovered the
Glove Reinforcements
, I would like to add a link to my favorite
gear list
, which I like because it has gear ranked quantitatively by a "tank points" system. While the system is not perfect (e.g. it doesn't seem to give points for hit rating or expertise) it's still nice to be able to compare items that have dissimilar stats by any objective method whatsoever.
Thanks again for your very nice guide, I tried using your "sit down to get crit for extra rage" technique earlier today to great effect. Can't believe I never thought of that.
<edit>
Noticed you still have the 2.3 badge gear in your item list, and I thought you might want to add the
new 2.4 gear
(particularly the chest and legs, as the 2.3 versions have itemization points wasted on spell damage and block rating, respectively). You may not want to add the
new ring
as it has no crit reduction for the new tanks. I only mention this in the interest of completeness, as some warriors may wish to save their badges for the higher item-level gear.

Tank harder & tell them to lay off. I mean, if you're reading the stickies & really trying to practice, then it's all on them -- they'll need to stop being overzealous on pulls.

Enchantments Selection
Chest
-
Exceptional Health
Wrist
-
Major Defense
or
Fortitude
depending on need. This is one spot where you can more efficiently get +defense instead of Stamina (ie, normally you give up a +12 Stamina gem for only +8 def gem).
Hands
-
Glove Reinforcements
for maximum effective health, or
Heavy Knothide Armor Kit
for gear used in high magic damage fights (Hydross, Kael).
Excellent guide, just wanted to add a few comments:
If you lack a bit of defense, swapping the chest enchant from 150 hp to 15 defense rating is better than swapping a wrist enchant from 12 stamina to 12 defense rating. The reason being that 1 stamina is worth more than 10 hp when prot spec, and even more so if you get a kings buff.
For hands, you should add the +2% threat enchant. This is obviously only for your threat gear. One item that would be a prime candidate for the threat enchant is the gloves off Maiden -

With regard to the consumables, you may want to move the food buffs up to the other consumables, and add super healing potions. Ironshield is obviously better for physical DPS fights, but tell Hydross or somesuch to care about your armor...
Edit: Oh, and I don't remember seeing runes of warding mentioned? (see

)

Sakkura - thanks for those comments! I included them all immediately. If there was a smily face that captured the essence of a guide eating delicious information, and saying "nom nom nom", I would use it here (there is not).
As for runes of warding - when were they changed into their current incarnation? I remember them getting altered a few times a ways back, and this is the first version that seems moderatly useful (though the 90 sec cooldown is blah).
No problem.
I honestly have no idea about the runes. I actually liked some of their previous incarnations. Especially the time when they were utterly bugged with regard to expiring - they could last for days on end :D

hehe, they were changed so much, there's no telling.
Moenbase: If you have 490 defense, press "Shield Block" and you are uncrushable. Perhaps you refer to passive uncrushability? That is a pointless feat in all honesty. If you wish to read more about that, it is covered in a section of its own under the
Warrior FAQ
.
