LOL - Pet Battles are actually quite fun. I thought you had to battle other players, and that's why I wasn't interested. But, I found out you can just battle pets out in the wild if you want. I've only done about 5 or 6 battles with rabbits and squirrels, but it was quite fun. I now have a level 3 dragonhawk hathcling and a level 2 Baby Blizzard Bear.
Cheers.

:) It can become quite addictive. I started just wanting one of each battlepet then I though I might as well go for the rare versions. Now I can't leave a zone I am levelling in till I have the rare version of all that zones pets.
Its madness I tell you, madness.

This is why I am currently staying away from pet battles, I am skeered that that will start taking up all my time.

It's a good way of killing time when waiting for a queue to pop, or when you've really got nothing better to do. i have level 5, 3 and 2 pets now :)
A question: Why do a lot of my Pets have more than one copy? And when I am fighting a cat, it say's 1/3. What's that all about.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

The 1 of 3 means how many you have in your journal.
And when the pets originally were turned into one tab, there were a lot of bugs, as all characters on the account gave over their pets.

I understand that and will probably start doing them once I complete the leveling of my druids, one each alliance and horde.

Multiples of non-battle pets can be caged and sold or traded to others, battle pets cannot. So if you have multiples of say the
Sprite Darter Hatchling
you can cage the extras and post them to the AH. This pet used to be available in Feralas via an Alliance quest but that quest was removed in Cataclysm and the pet is now an ultra rare zone drop. This would apply to any vendor purchased or rare drop pets. I don't know if it applies to Blizzard store pet, achievement pets or holiday pets, but I imagine it would.
Multiples of pets you battle, cage and 'win' cannot be sold or traded.
If you have multiples of battle pets, release the lesser quality ones by selecting, then right clicking them in your pet log. Their quality is Poor (grey), Common (white), Uncommon (green) and Rare (blue) just like gear. I've no idea if the 'epic' pets (Hyacinth Macaw) are actually called epic and colored purple because I've not decided whether to learn or sell mine.
If you decide to keep battling until you obtain the rare version,
make sure
you only have 2/3 of that pet in your log already at most. Nothing hurts like finally finding a rare version of a hard to obtain battlepet only to discover you already have 3 of those but a lesser quality in your log.

I just got my first uncommon pet - A black lamb.
Where can I find rare pets? I've looked on wowheads Battle Pet maps, but those don't say the rarity of the pets.
Cheers.

All of the battlepets come in versions from Poor to Rare, you just have to keep battling till you find the rares. What I do is initiate a battle and check the rarity of the pet (and their secondaries, which come into play for battlepets level 5 and higher). If I already have an uncommon of that pet, I just forfeit the battle unless I find a rare. Once the battle has started, there is a white flag icon on your battle bar, just click it to cancel the battle.
Now, technically you don't
need
rare pets, but their stats are higher and they do more damage than the lesser versions of that pet at the same level. This can come in handy for speeding up your battles and your pet farming. For me personally, it's just a thing. I found one rare pet and I decided to find them all. This from a girl who loathes Pokemon.

Oh I get it. You can't tell the rarity of the Pet until you initiate the battle. Ahh.
And what do you mean by 'secondaries' for pets level 5 and higher?
BTW thanks for all the info, and keep checking back, I'm sure I'll have tons of other questions as I get sucked into this. I've looked at all the achievements you can get - OMG!
Cheers.

And what do you mean by 'secondaries' for pets level 5 and higher?Higher-level wild pets bring along one, later even two other team members, which you have to fight one by one to end the fight (receive XP and secure a captured pet - if you lose after successfully trapping a pet, that pet is lost)

Oh, and thanks to Nulgar for catching your question.
Two other points about secondaries though. Sometimes the secondary will be the pet you want to capture. You can only capture one during any one battle. If that's the case kill the primary, cage the secondary. Cry like a little girl if they are both on your wanted list.
The other thing is, I mentioned earlier about each zone having at least one (sometimes two or more) pets that are absolutely unique to that zone. Those ones can be tricky to find as they spawn in very low numbers or at particular times of the day or even at certain weather conditions. Some of those pets CAN appear as secondaries to other pets in the zone. The Showshoe Hare in Hillsbarad comes to mind. If you can't find one of those pets on their own, go to town on the other pets in the zone looking for the one you really want.
The database page for each of the pets usually has loads of good advice in the comments section.
Edit: Apparently the language filter doesn't care for the last name of the author of a Tale of Two Cities which I used as a descriptor above (cry like ....)

I don't think he would mind at all. He floated the idea of a separate pet battle forum, but the idea was nixed.

Thanks, you're a lamb. I swear this is
the
last time I am moving myself. In the future it will be professional movers or bust.

Worse. I'm 42. This lifting and carrying business is killing my back and what remains of my sense of humour.
