A summary if the first comic book series:
"The Promise" deals with what happe s immediately after the end of the war. Aang and Zuko struggle to bring peace to the four nations, with the majority of the problems arising in Fire Nation colonies. In these colonies those from the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation have gotten along and don't mind living together. Aang and Zuko try to separate them but end up leaving them alone. This is probably how Republic City came around.
As for the Draco Malfoy thing, he was raised the same way Azula might have been but he ended up being not so bad. Of course he didn't have the big turnaround like Zuko did, but he didn't become insane.
And I agree, Azula brought it on herself.

to be more precise the earth kingdom and fire nation citizens have blended over the many generations. There are earth bending fire nation citizens for example.
Also spoilers
Also as for the Azula thing. She's a psychopath. Its how she can lie so effectively to someone reading her voice patterns.
But she still has bonds to her parents and her firebending is thee most major part of her core identity (very important to psychopaths). Plus theres also her Authority and "friends". She was the leader of her friends and she had authority over them.
When her friends turned on her, especially the nature of how they turned on her (one for Zuko and the other using a surprise attack bending-shutting-down pressure point attack {word of god has also said that Azula was more "fond" of this particular person}), it started to create cracks in her sense of self and identity. She was betrayed by those she "trusted" (those closest to her who she thought she had full control and authority over), experienced a loss of control over it.
and in the end, right at the cusp of what she thought was victory, WHILE exploding with supreme firebending power from the Meteor, she lost to a water-bender she'd paid little to no attention to in the past.
That basicly just turned her from cracking to absolutely broken bat^&*! mentally insane.
Everything she trusted and thought she had perfect control and power over, everything she had confidence in and believed, stuff she constructed as her core identity had failed or turned into a lie.
Thats what drove her to her state at the end of the 1st show and what we've seen in the latest comic.

Don't you mean how Toph can detect if their heartbeat rapidly goes up when they lie? Because anyone can fool that with enough practice. It's why lie detector tests aren't that great of evidence in court cases because they aren't 100% accurate. I never heard of anyone being able to tell if someone is lying by their voice pattern.
Oh and I thought of a character I can't stand. Chi Chi from DBZ. Mainly because all she's worried aboutius Goku leaving all of a sudden when the world is about to be destroyed by someone or something. Not to mention keeping Gohan locked in his room studying when he could be training to help defeat threats like that.

Isn't it from the vibrations of their speech that she can tell?

Honestly? Eragon, from the inheritance trillogy. He asks too many questions, he's ALWAYS doing everything perfect except when it's important to do so and he wouldn't be @#$% weren't it for Saphira.

No hax, "Toph demonstrated an ability to sense when a person was lying by the vibrations of his/her heartbeat and breathing patterns." She is able to recognize voices, but she can't tell if they're lying by their voice. She did this in the "Lake Lagoi" episode, the one were they brainwashed Jet.

Oh God, yes. I loathe Eragon. He's a complete &*!@#$bag, but gets away with it because he's the designated hero.

I liked Inheritance better the first time when it was called Star Wars. That being said it was a good read, just had a dumb ending and a terrible main character.

Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has to be the most annoying character that comes to mind.
The Ginyu Force from Dragonball Z and Millie and Meryl from Trigun also get on my nerves.

Earlier I said Eustice from Narnia, but I think I might change my answer to "the entire cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers".

He still annoyed me... I've been in that place and I understand the character, but it still annoyed me nonetheless.

Ashley from Resident Evil 4. I know we're supposed to protect her, but good lord, I really had to fight the temptation of putting a bullet in her head.
She's whiny, bratty, spends all of the game complaining and screaming (in a really annoying high-pitched voice reminiscent of smurfette) she contributes NOTHING to the plot, her lines are weak, her acting is HORRIBLE (every time she screams
LEEEEEYOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNN! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLP!
(Which in this game, that'd be about once per minute EVERY TIME you fight the ganados or any other enemy) it makes my ears bleed and makes me furiously smash the mute button on my TV) and as if that wasn't nauseating enough, she's also trying to become Leon's Love interest :S even though she has NOTHING on Ada Wong.
By far the most frustrating character I've ever had the disgrace to escort, and sadly, 60% of Resident Evil 4 is spent having to protect her sorry ass. It got bad enough that I actually cheered every time she was re-kidnapped (Which happened a grand total of FIVE TIMES!) because it meant sweet precious time I wouldn't have to haul her sorry ass along.
I don't think I'll ever see another character in any videogame more annoying than her. EVER.

So I was thinking, in every movie/tv show/anime/video game/book theres always this one character that you just wanna smack, that you hate more than the villains. I thought it would make for a fun discussion. What fictional characters do you hate, and why?
Ill start with mine. Lori Grimes from the walking dead, and Skyler White from breaking bad.
Definitely Skyler White from Breaking Bad.
I just started watching The Walking Dead so I don't know about Lori Grimes yet...

It's funny, I actually agree. Her character bugs me. BUT... she does an amazing job at it. lol

I think they missed a golden opportunity by not making the Red Ranger a Native American Indian. I mean, Yellow Ranger = Asian American, Black Ranger = African American, Blue Ranger = Male, Pink Ranger = Female. It would be the perfect storm of children's programming prejudice if the Red Ranger was an Indian. But then, the Green Ranger would have to be some lame hippie/vegan stereotype, and the White Ranger would probably have to be a
Thern
since Blue and Pink are already white.
Speaking of Barsoomian characters, though, Deja Thoris is kind of annoying. Not a very strong female character...
