"At what cost Irene? They would never help for free!"

"They can't help you Irene," Peter cried. "Not worth it. Nothing worth it. A name? A place? What then?" the priest asked desperately. "How can you pay? Not worth it Irene. Nothing worth what they'll ask for. Never. No. Please, don't. Don't..." he implored her.

Peter grew silent. His eyes were hollow and staring at her as his grip loosened on her wrist. "I...I don't want to see this. Irene," his voice was different from his choking cries from before. It was low and empty. "This isn't the answer. It's not...no..." he whispered softly. "They'll do nothing. Must know that. They'll tell you. Then, they'll take you. Nothing else. They'll do nothing. Sold yourself for a name. No revenge. Just a name to hate. And will never be able to do anything more. Slave then. Just a slave..."
He released Irene's arm. "Don't understand what you went through. Can't pretend. Won't. Never will. Begging you, please. Will go down on hands and knees. Anything...everything. But...won't stop you. Promised. But, won't watch. No...won't..." he mumbled, taking a step back.

Peter returned her embrace, hiding his face in her shoulder as he shook with sobs.
"Please...Don't..." he mumbled.

Peter seemed to stiffen with a choking gasp, and nodded into her shoulder. Turning away so that Irene couldn't see his face, he exited the inn with a heavy step, shoulders slumped and head bowed in shame.

Peter stepped out of the inn.
Night had fallen. The moon had risen above the city like a great silver coin, its face reflecting down upon the lone youth who walked aimlessly beneath it. Here and there lanterns had been lit, and glowed dully like fireflies amongst the empty streets of the mage district. Peter wandered, sadness weighing on him like a thick veil, blocking out the world without. He didn't even shiver as the cold wind ghosted by, sending his robes fluttering about his ankles.
After some time, he stopped before a set of stone steps carved into a larger block, leading up to a level platform on which rested a small building. The priest slowly fell down onto the second step, crossing his arms over his knees and leaning his head against them. He stared blankly at the grass between his feet.
There he remained until his tears had dried.

Peter heard the rustling of the grass before him faintly, as if only the echoes through a tunnel. He gradually raised his face to look at the stag blankly, realization slowly setting in.
"You...You brought me there. For a reason," he noted dully.

"Should feel mad. I suppose. But, can't understand me.Animal. All the same. No...no..." He sighed, resting his chin upon his arms. "Fruitless, though. Didn't help. Couldn't stop her. Could have tried harder, maybe. But...maybe not. Don't know. Never will, now...Lost her. Couldn't convince her. Not otherwise..."
Peter sighed. He had no more tears to shed. Instead, he rested his damp cheek upon the crook of his arm and stared at the stag.
"Not strong enough. Her to resist. Me...to stop her..."

"Weak, I suppose," he murmured. "In convictions. Left the monastery too soon. Perhaps. But, suppose that's the nature. Of the beast after all. Experience. Though, what I'll do now?" He mused, thinking aloud. "Don't know. Can't go back. Can't...though, where now?"
He sighed sadly. "Don't know. Just...don't know."
