"But effective." He said sitting up and seeing her smile brought a smile to his own face.

Meyer took a deep breath.
"Look, son. I'm not an inquisitor. I mean, the scythe and the demons and the fires of Nether should be a dead giveaway, in case you need evidence. And what I'm trying to do here is find a way for you to keep your head on your shoulders and your hands out of cufflinks after Razzmatazz is dealt with, one way or another.
Why am I doing this for a complete stranger that struggles to irritate me with his questionable wit, you ask. You surely remember those trigger-happy servitors of Light I've mentioned before. If they get on this task, what do you think will happen to you and your master both?
The look of impotent rage on their faces as an ungodly warlock wannabe escapes from their grasp is a reward enough for me. But for that, I have to know everything that they may use as a charge against you."

"Hold on, back up. Charge? So, let me get this straight. Your pardon is less let me go...and is more you drag me before the inquisition where you, a warlock, act as my defence."
Max threw up his arms. "Oh that is just
perfect
!"

"I have not said that," Meyer pointed out. "If you are both lucky and industrious, you'll manage to lay low and avoid the scrutiny of our holy mother the Church," he spoke, vitriol practically dripping from his mouth at the mention of the religious institution.
"To reiterate. I will let you go if that is what you wish, and in the occasion of the Light-thumpers catching up to you I will try to defend you if I am able to be present at the trial. They might just kill you in the field because you made them run; however, it is possible they will not identify you as Razzmatazz's prodigal apprentice - they will not get that information from me at least.
So. After you have told me everything and we have assured you are less of a malevolent apostate and more of an unlucky young mage in the wrong place at the wrong time, you have two options - fleeing, or voluntarily coming to the trial. In the latter case, I can guarantee you will remain alive and unmutilated, although you will probably not like my last resort of ensuring so - and that would be me taking personal responsibility for your actions for a prolonged probation period."
The warlock left unmentioned the possibility of Max actually being, in Meyer's terminology, 'a malevolent apostate', leaving his intent anyone's guess.

The man paused, thinking, not particularly fond of adventurers; they always found a way to meddle with the best of plans and had an affinity for sticking their noses into affairs that did not concern them.
Nevertheless, they could prove useful, given a nudge in the right direction...
"I do not suppose you have made the acquaintance of one or more of our local bandits?" he inquired conversationally, deciding upon a different approach, a sense of unease emanating from the officers in the room as he spoke.

Max was not listening to the warlock, indicated by the fact that he talked over him. As he spoke, he grew visibly more irate, riling himself up and beginning to pace about and gesturing wildly.
"Oh wonderful. Just perfect. I get to face the inquisition with my defence lawyer of speechy McHamfist here. And no doubt backed up by the surprise witnesses of bitey succubus with an armour fetish, tiny imp who talks too much, and fat demon dog who is decidedly
not
big boned! Oh they'll just love that! Wasn' this just a brilliant plan!
"Story a my freakin' life though, innit? Not that anyone 'ere'd know, since every time I get people working in one direction, they decide a better use a their time's learning the art of slamming their heads into brick walls! Odds are you' just bugger off when you get what you want anyway! Tha's the way thigns work innit?" Max had thrown this accusation at the warlock with a spiteful finger. "Like turkey legs the bird brain 'ere and which witch?" Max rounded and pointed furiously at the woods. "That b***!"
Deep in the woods, a wolf paused in licking its wounds and pricked a sharp ear up. The creature seemed to make an almost human chuckle before returning to its ministrations.
"And me? I...I...Grghhhhhhhh! So frustrating! But hey! Nothin' new there! Reliable family? Pshaw! 'ou needs that noise! First day a magic school, got mah nose broken and laughed at by some witch! Then spend the rest a my school life underachievin' and livin' off scraps because screw children! They get ta work for their tuition and board!
"But wait, wha's this? Possible 'pretinceship to an archmage? Fel yeah! Things 'r lookin' up! Got my own room, three square meals, learnin' from a talented wizard. Sure, 'e forgets that bit sometimes but fel! Learnin' me some knowledge! Warpin' perceptions like nobody's Light lovin' beezeness and doin' damn fine at it!
"But hold on a sec'? Things'r goin' Maximillian's way! Fel that! Fel. Freaking. That! Here, how about life throws me anotha' sucker punch! Yeah, fel yeah. Let's ruin his life from now on! If it weren't for that amulet, it'd all-."
Sudden silence filled the clearing. Max had grown rigid with realization, eyes bulging out and mouth hanging open without making a sound. No, no that couldn't have happened. This couldn't be happening. Like being doused with cold water he came to himself, pale as a corpse and alone with all eyes on him.

"
Poor fella needed to get this off his chest, eh?
" Tarnik squeaked at some point during Max's rant, prompting his master to shush him.
After the realization hit the illusionist over the head with a heavy blunt object and he shut up, Meyer sighed. Already suspecting the futility of the action, he nevertheless spoke, "Don't keep us in suspense."

For the first time since the warlock had walked in, Max felt afraid. And he made the same mistake people will make when afraid. The same mistake he did in a Goldshire inn what felt like a lifetime ago.
He went for his sword.
