First off I'm not an expert baker but I do try and give it a go and Ill have to say
Gamer
first on good on you for trying but I would suggest that next time just find a recipe for cookies online and follow it to the letter. Once you have got that down pat then try experimenting that's what I do and all will go a lot easier for you.
Does this challenge have to be specifically for your neighbours? The reason I ask is that next Monday is the final rehearsal for one of the bands that I play in and we are planning a small rehearsal followed by a little party and I was planning on making gingerbread (something I have never made before). If this is allowed in the timeframe I shall take pictures throughout the baking process and report back on the results.

Not going to try to keep your yeast alive, pikey? Or is that for the advanced class? :)
Gamer - I strongly agree with Dragalthor's idea of picking a recipe for what you want to make and repeating over and over and over and over again until you get it right.
Just don't pick
macarons

Cheers Dragalthor: nah, the idea was just to get people to perform a service for people they don't normally cater to, so bandmates are fine. Ed: as in, looking forward to the pics. After returning today, I found most of my cookies gone and a "thanks!" note next to my "free cookies" note, which kinda made up for the fact that they sucked. Lol.
It ended up being pretty expensive since I didn't have even the basics to hand (flour, sugar, vanilla), so I don't think I'll be improving my baking any time soon (at least for cookies). Though I'll be slightly more confident that the oven won't explode when I go near it, even if it seems to be totally inconsistent in terms of time taken to thoroughly cook.

Lol, a few days ago I dropped my sister off to piano lessons so my father could avoid getting trapped in the house... Then I went to my neighbours so my father had to pick her up. He ended up staying over for 5 hours and drinking a litre of homemade grape moonshine, haha. I'm sure your mince pies will be delicious. Took me until I was about 10 to realise that they weren't deceptively sweet rotten meat, at which point I began to like them a lot more.
Ed: the oven is electric and the markings have fallen off the hob. When I moved in a flatmate told me that the hob was left on overnight once, since there was no indicator other than temperature and the entire kitchen was sweltering. Better than leaving the gas running overnight though...
I made myself a fried egg earlier, flicked water at the various hobs in order to find out which was which.

Week 8: Learn 10 words in sign language. That can be
American Sign Language
,
British Sign Language
or whatever feels appropriate to you. I was sort of inspired by Obama signing "
thanks
" - I realised I wouldn't know even the basics of how to communicate with a deaf person other than mime or writing.

Haha, no worries, I'll take your word for it!
Don't actually have a clue what'll be this week's challenge though...

Challenge for week 10 is to invent an exercise you haven't seen anyone else doing before. Doesn't have to be effective, doesn't have to become regular, may even be utterly against recommendations of sane people. Videos appreciated.
Here
is mine.

Don't have a video but... I think a decent bit of exercise could be accomplished if you attempted, hopefully successfully, to mow your lawn by pushing your manual lawnmower with your feet rather than your hands. Yes, it will take longer... and you'll likely (almost certainly) have grass stains. To avoid this, you could contemplate performing this exercise in the nude.
Good luck. ;)

LARPing in the snow. I'm so stiff right now. Whatever happens, you'll probably end up tired. I had to carry a dead robot for like ten minutes who was actually a real person on the inside who was heavy and yeah.

Argh. Wish I could say I utilised the skills taught in previous weeks, but alas, it wasn't the case. A repair guy has been at my university accommodation for ages fixing the shower and knocked on my door. I assumed he was going to say the shower was fixed, but he asked to come in and I realised from his speech he was deaf. He also used a bunch of gestures. He went to work on my sink... The only words that sprung to mind were "gay", "naked", "sorry" and "confused", which, on reflection, were not really appropriate for the situation. Gave him the thumbs up when he fixed my sink though.
Anyway, this week's challenge is to write to a prisoner. Eighteen years or older only, can find prisoner info
here
