Lol. Way more sober now. What a fantastic night.
Made my way to
Madrid's soccer stadium
last night. 100,000 Spanish fans outside watching the game on giant screens. The players come out and the anthems are sung. (
Video #1
). The atmosphere is amazing. Every time a save happens, every time a ball is stolen or lost, every time a player goes down or is knocked down; the cheers, and boo's, and shouts for victory are overwhelming.
2-0 the half ends like clock work (
Video #2
) I am surrounded by cheers and joy.
The rest of the night......we'll yeah. ^_^
Cheers,
Hat

Because a country preparing for the World Cup means they are going to win it? Last I checked, Spain won the last World Cup, even though Brazil was in it as well. I'm sure that was because Brazil didn't care about winning that time right?
Can't you read? Next world cup is being hosted by Brazil it's self, that's a big advantage. New talents will have come out to Brazil national team to help win the cup, and even the fans will be outrageous to lose this precious chance to get it. Some even commit suicide when they see their team losing...
No need to get personal because someone points out a flawed statement.
You claimed Spain wouldn't win the WC2014 because Brazil is hosting and already preparing for it. Just because Brazil is hosting it, and are bent on winning it doesn't make it so. Do they have an advantage because they are playing in their own country, yes. Will they defeat a superior team just because they are playing in the own country, no.
Every country that hosts a WC or EC wants to win in their own country, unfortunately that actually happening is pretty rare.

I haven't seen suicide, but there was a woman who was arrested for beating and choking her child recently because she was drunk and upset about some sports team losing. And there have been a number of riots over sports wins and losses.
People be crazy when it comes to sports.

True hosting the cup can give you a swell of fan support. But both Brazil AND Spain couldn't use that support to win when they needed too. Brazil losing while hosting in 1950 and Spain losing while hosting in 1982.
Spain did played better but hear this, they lost some respect from football fans because they didn't show mercy to Italy when they were playing with 10 man and Spain leading at the same time 2-0. That's not fair play.
It's always a shame when you need to play a man down because of an injury, as for it not being fair play? I don't see how you figure. The game started fair, and 11 v 11 Spain made the first half there by a wide margin. Would it have been fair to stop attacking in the second half and play 1-5-5 and make an unstoppable wall and win 2-0? No, attacking always yields to better play. There was no red card, there was a yellow on both sides. The only thing that forced Italy to play with 10 was because they used all 3 of there subs at the 61 minute of play. Spain still had on left at 86. Fair play? Yes, it was a very well played game.
Oh Mytie. The only downside of being a mod, is that sometimes I can't speak my mind the way I want to.

Actually, interestingly enough, the World Cup leads to a decrease in suicides, not just in the country, but worldwide, because while a indescribably small fraction of the population commits suicide based on the national teams play, the solidarity created between everyone, winning or losing, is tremendously effective because it brings those who are otherwise isolated and most likely to commit suicide into a mentality of being connected with everyone else.
Soccernomics is a great book.

So the last phase of this years 2012 Euro Cup, is the celebrations. I had the huge luck and opportunity to be in my home country, the winning country, the victorious country during it.
In 2008, 2010, and now in 2012 the players of the Spanish Selections have been bused through the city to
La plaza de Cibeles
. This year, an estimated
1.1 MILLION
people gathered to celebrate. As the cup enters the Plaza, the cheers are moving, and the sea of red swells to get a glimpse of the cup, and the players. It's a good think i'm 6'4 and a head higher than most of the people there. I was able to get a clean shot. (
Video #1
)
The players get to the stage and a multitude of famous Spanish signers and performers entertain the fans.
Cali & El Dandee
and
David Bisbal
are there to sing "
Sube la Mano y Grita Gol
" and the crowd goes crazy! (
Video #2
)
Pepe Reina takes the microphone for something that has become a sort of tradition. During the Euro 2008 win, he was on the stage and did gave all the players on the team and individual introduction and joking presentation. In 2010, he was there once again, so ofcourse the cheers for him were louder than ever when he once again took the microphone to introduce the players. I recorded a couple, but here are two of my favorites:
Andrés Iniesta (Player of the tournament) (Will Upload Later)
Iker Casillas (Captain, and goalkeeping legend!) (
Video #4
)
As the presentations end, the we march off to drink, and dance, and celebrate our amazing team! 1 Million people, a sea of red and yellow! (
Video #5
)
Congratulations too all the teams. Congratulations to all the players. What an amazing Euro Cup! 2 years to go until they all meet again!
Cheers,
Hat

So, they won a soccer game, and 1.1 million people celebrated?
I really really want to understand this. Hat, obviously you are a huge fan of this soccer game. Explain to me why it means so much to you.

I really really want to understand this. Hat, obviously you are a huge fan of this soccer game. Explain to me why it means so much to you.
I really don't understand how you can't understand something like this.
Lets break it down for you. The Euro Cup happens once every 4 years. World cup happens once every 4 years as well Put them together and you have 1 major international soccer event every 2 years. Spain has now won 3 of these events in a row. The Euro in 2008, the World in 2010, and now the Euro again in 2012. This has never before be done in history.
Now you add in that soccer is the most popular sport in the world, that 53 other countries tried to qualify for the 16 country tournament, and then win it. It's not just one game that they had to win. It was an international tournament.
It's a huge moment of national pride when something like this happens. It brings a country together, especially in a time when they need it most. Spain has around 48 million citizens. Given some rough rounding, that's 2% of the countries population in one place at one time. That's pretty huge.
It means more to me than to other people here I guess because I am Spanish, and I was able to be in the capital to watch the final and enjoy in the celebration.
But hey, if none of that explains it to you, then I'll just give you the american analogy,
Super bowl
, all tell you that its a joke compared to the love and devotion around the world to the sport of soccer. And almost 1 million fans were at that parade too =P
Cheers,
Hat

Cheers,
HatI don't "get" Superbowl either. I guess, I guess I don't understand the reasoning behind watching a professional sporting event. I can understand enjoying watching people play games, and playing games yourself, but I don't understand the extreme soccer jingoist mentality. I also don't understand how it rallys a country. If my country's soccer team won, that would mean that some people in my country are mighty good at soccer, but it wouldn't really speak to me about the value of my country.
It may sound like I'm trying to "speak down" to the national/worldwide enthusiasm toward this significant soccer event, but I'm not. I'm trying to understand the psychology of each individual person, to try to draw conclusions about the crowd mentality. If no one else cared about this soccer event, and no one went, and no one watched, would you care? I suspect there is some "go with the crowd" mindset at work, but I have no way of knowing. When I break down the event to its basic mechanics: a group of people from one location play soccer against a group of people from another location (or any other major sporting event), I don't see why this is such an enigma.
The crowd mentality is something I don't like. I think that it holds back humanity. People who vote the way their parents and friends vote, or the people who take up smoking/drugs because others are doing it, etc etc. My daughter wanted to read hunger games. Last year it was twilight. Before that, it was Harry Potter. It's always what the other kids are reading. What is it about what others do that convince us to do the same, even if its something that at its core, doesn't hold inherent significance (ie soccer).
I've always been of the mentality of "why should I". Lately, I've been expanding that to "why do other people". I want to know why people do what it is they do. My question is:
why do people like it
? The answer you've provided me is: "its a major international event". The reason it is such an event is because
people like it
. Another reason you gave is that it's the most popular sport in the world, which is another way of saying
people like it
. The last part of your reason was "national pride", which is to say that as a nation,
people like it
. In my honest attempt to understand why people like it, the best I can extrapolate is because people like it. This shouldn't be taken as me saying people shouldn't like it. I couldn't care less what people like. I care about why. If people want to start liking a new sport where teams of people compete to see which team can fill up a barrel the fastest, using nothing but their spit, then fine. I'd want to know what the attraction is. If the entire world loved to love the sport of spit in a barrel, fine. I'd suspect the only reason is because other people did, and if you were to remove the crowd from any particular individual, that individual would cease to care.
So, are you saying that soccer is so popular for no other reason than it is popular, and if so, is that just saying that it is crowd mentality?

I know you MyTie, I see how you post, I read your words. Don't play grey line game with me, and don't put words in my mouth.
First looking at your previous post, it was more than a question. You've been in this topic for a while, and if you havn't read up on what the Euro cup is, I suggest you do before you toss anymore one liners out there like "So they won a soccer game". It's and international tournament, a competition between countries to post the best 23 players they can, and have them bring back the glory that is an international win.
Why do I like soccer? Before I knew it was the worlds most popular sport, my dad and I played together. 2 people, kicking a ball. Wow, as a 3 year old that's really fun. I grow up, I start playing with other kids who enjoy kicking a ball around too. We grow up a little more, and we learn that we can make a competition of it, and get fun out of playing hard, and trying to win. Now we need to kick the ball in the goal. Grow up a little more, we from teams we play other people. We read about the sport, we learn that its world wide, we see professional players with skills that we couldn't even dream of having. Now we work harder, I want to do a bicycle kick too! I want to juggle the ball 100 times. I want to watch them play, so that I can play better myself.
Now I am my age, I watch soccer. I watch games and players play at a level I can not. I live vicariously through them. Their goals are my goals, there saves are my saves, there wins are my wins, and there loses are my loses.
Soccer creates dreams. Soccer keeps kids off the streets, soccer fuels charities, hope and well-being across the world. This is why me, and the majority of the world play/watch/live soccer.
So when a country wins one of the world's most celebrated cups, yes there is going to be a party.
Can you truly can not make parallels from the love and enjoyment of soccer to anything else that you enjoy in life?
Cheers,

Grey line? I don't really want to argue about it. Try not to be so confrontational. Can you truly can not make parallels from the love and enjoyment of soccer to anything else that you enjoy in life?Uhm, not really. I love my wife because she supports me, and is a terrific woman to be around. My kids represent my hopes and dreams for the future. I enjoy good food because it pleases me. There is nothing that I participate in that is also participated in by large crowds. In fact, I dislike crowds immensely. Nothing in my life resembles a professional sporting event. It's honestly something I don't understand.
Anyway, I can tell you are touchy about this subject, and have been a bit touchy with me on everything lately. I don't know why, and don't really know how to go about fixing this, so let's just drop it. I don't want to spend my evening arguing about soccer.

This is a completely serious question for you MyTie: If you don't like football(gonna use the real name) why in the name of the seven hells would you post in a thread about the game?
