I choose the complete eradication of all disease.
How do you handle the exponential population growth, and likely subsequent mass starvation that would follow?
I could not find a credible statistic, especially worldwide, but I did find
this
, pertaining only to the US. By my calculations, about 1.5 million people per year,at least, would not die, at least not at that time.
In that same year, 2011, there were 4.1 million live births is the US. So that leaves a net gain of 5.6 million new people in America per year, instead of the net gain of 1.6 million that we had. That is a 350% per year increase in the net population gain of just 1 country.
Now extrapolate that across the world, especially in countries like Africa where a much larger % of the population dies from diseases. It would not take but a couple generations to quickly exceed the capacity of the planet without these natural, although often tragic, causes of death.
It is a nobel wish, but in the end, it would cause greater harm than good.
Honestly, its a very good topic, because if you look at almost any "reasonable"answer, there is going to be negative, unintended consequences for most all of them.
Lets take your example..."world peace". Now, if I get to be omnipotent in this fantasy, this would be a great choice. If I just wish it, and all wars suddenly end for good, that is great. But if you apply an actual "how" to it, none of the options come without consequences.
Option 1: Isolationism. You achieve world peace by each country, or each group of allies isolating themselves from any possible enemy. This options brings devastating economic consequences, as even most enemies rely in each other for world trade. This would effectively be the same as imposing severe sanctions on every country in some way. It also impacts social integrations, the arts, science.....the list goes on.
Option 2: De-militarization / de-weaponizing. If you take away all tools required to wage war, at the very least, the conflicts would be much less severe. You can only do so much damage hand to hand, or with sticks and stones. But how do you control lawlessness? If only 1 man has a gun in the world, he becomes exponentially more powerful than any other man. Weapons are not only a tool for war, but a tool to keep the peace, and enforce the law. You also would have to have some serious "fairy-dust" to erase the knowledge we have to create weapons, otherwise, whoever re-creates the strongest weapons fastest, would sweep themselves into power.
Option 3: One World Government. This just poses so many issues, it could be a novel in itself. How would this even be implemented? What laws would be followed? There is simply too much cultural and religious difference in the world for this to ever be a possibility.
So TL:DR....I would choose world peace, but it would take a "fairy-dust" concept for it to ever happen. *POOF*...we all now get along!
I would be interested to see if anyone can come up with an actual idea, that is a truly groundbreaking, game-changing, concept, that had actual possibilities of happening, that didn't carry as much or more negative consequence as it did positive.

Lets be honest, if somebody had that good of an idea without just using a fairy dust to cover up the cracks, they'd likely not share it in the Off-Topic section of a World of Warcraft forum. They'd probably be applying for a patent, or running for a high-profile public office, or making business decisions that affect the lives of thousands of workers, or... you know... anything more constructive that they can do with the idea than posting it in Off-Topic. lol.
As for myself, I pick a worldwide end to human rights violations. How does it happen? Idunno... fairy dust sounds pretty good.

Not necessarily,
One thing that comes to mind, that could be a possibility, would be a drastic worldwide reduction in the reliance on fossil fuel, especially in transportation.
I could see, in 50 years, an alternative for the modern internal combustion engine being viable, especially for cars. (It would take some pretty serious advances in technology to replace the diesel engines used in trucking, just because of the shear amount of power and torque they require to move such heavy loads.) But I do think that advances in electric or hydrogen fuel cells could replace the gasoline engine...
if
the auto industry could be persuaded to do so. The biggest roadblock to advancing this technology is the co-dependence of the oil industry with the auto industry.
If we could reduce the dependence on gasoline by 75%, that would allow many countries to become fully oil independant, which would in turn reduce a decent amount of global conflict. Without the need to protect an oil supply, the amount of intervention in the middle east would be greatly reduced. Without the massive amount of wealth created by controlling oil, certain middle eastern countries would not have the endless funds to continue to support never-ending wars and terrorist organizations.....and so on down it goes. If all the major consumers of middle eastern oil became fully energy independent, it could drastically reduce the amount of conflict in that region.
Not to mention the environmental impact. Granted, I fully disbelieve in "Global Warming", but I could not argue that eliminating 75% of the vehicle emissions around the world would not have a positive impact on air quality, wildlife, ect.
And I don't see any major downsides either. Most of the oil-rich countries do not necessarily "depend" on their oil exports to maintain the quality of life for their population, so they are not at risk of collapsing. The lion's share of the profits go directly to the royalty or rulers of those countries. I am not going to be too worried if some Sheik somewhere cannot afford a solid gold toilet because they have nowhere to sell their oil.

209: Reliance on fossil fuel power plants; I'd honestly prefer if those were closed down and changed to the nuclear option, the wind power option, building up areas to allow for more water turbine options, and setting aside areas that are currently 'unlivable' to create solar panel farms(IE turn huge areas of the deserts in the States into farm locations).

I'd make it so that all the horrors of 2012 will happen. However, it's about 1.5 months from now, so who knows?

I'd control every DSW and Victoria Secret. Free shoes and undies for LIFE!
In the future, I will be quite content if I manage to retain control of both my bladder and my bowels.
As well as this.
I do know - she in an affected region but is okay. That's all I know though - I infer the second part from her last-logged-into-WoW time. I imagine she's very busy with aftermath stuff and will check in when things settle down.
Thanks, Ireney. I figured as much... hopefully she stays safe and well, as well as the other Wowheaders that were affected :)
