I really do think there's an unfair expectation on WoW and MMO's in general. They aren't infinite in content. At any point. Nothing is. No other source of entertainment will keep you supplied with new forever nor do I think it's fair that people expect Blizz to have enough "stuff" to do to keep you entertained 24/7. They provide the sandbox and some toys to play with, the rest is up to you. (Not entirely directed at the OP)
For $15 a month, every person has to be a jduge as to the value of the entertainment they will get over the next 30 days. For me, the price has most often been worth the amount of entertainment I get out of it. I've personally quit like 7 times when I feel like the $15 isn't worth the entertainment I am getting out of the game. Then, I come back later when it's fun again or something new arrives. That's the beauty of WoW.
Good for you for taking a break. There's a million and one ways to fill up your free time. Find one that you enjoy.
Actually Blizzard has had 7 years to think up new and interesting things for the players to do. They didn't do that and stuck to "Raid or Quit" for that whole time. Now they're flailing for ideas that they should have had years ago.
I know all you like to do is bash Blizzard, but there is more to do then raiding. You can PvP, you can work on achievements, you can level alts. You can go back and quest on an opposite faction to learn more about lore on that side. They added the LFR which let a lot more people actually raid because they wanted to but had a hectic schedule in real life.
Just because you don't do any of that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do in the game. But I don't expect you to see that so its a moot point.

Just because you don't do any of that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do in the game. But I don't expect you to see that so its a moot point.
Let's see.
PvP: I have a PvP toon. I just don't find it fun any more. I know, that's my fault right?
Achievements: Between 9 lvl 85 toons, I have Explorer on 4, Loremaster on 2, Chef, Hallowed on all 9 85's *and* my bank troll.
Alts: I have *9* lvl 85 toons. I know, that's my fault right?
Not interested in playing alliance right now. Certainly not interested in starting over on a new server right now because all of my character slots are full on the server I play(ed) on.
I never did *anything* in WoW... not at all... not ever.
LFR? So the "more to do than raiding" is "raiding"? Wait... what?
You completely went around what I said though, you can still do all that other stuff. You obviously did it, so you know there is more to do then just raid. There are others that can still do those achievements, and PvP, and level alts. Telling them all there is to do is raid is a complete lie. Saying that all Blizzard focused on in the last 7 years was raiding is also a complete lie. Saying all Blizzard wants the player base to do is raid is a lie.
If they only wanted us to raid they would have gotten rid of the battlegrounds, the PvP vendors, being able to do arena matches, taken out PvP servers among other things.

No it's not a lie. Saying that raiding is not the only way to advance your character is the lie. Achievements don't give you gear. PvP only gives you enough sub-par gear to cheat the ilevel system.
Gear is the only means of advancement because of 7 years of "Raid or Quit".
It's all about the gear.
Yes it is a lie. There is more to the game than raiding and gear. Just because you don't acknowledge it, doesn't mean its true. The only time I judge a person by their gear is if they want to join me in a raid. Even if they have PvP gear on, as long as they don't screw up then its fine.
We have several people in my group that just focus on getting achievements. But that toon is just another alt and they have another they use for when we raid. One guy even leveled a Troll Warlock just to help get the
Classy Trolls
guild achievement.
Do people like getting new and better gear? Of course we do. Do we solely focus on gear and nothing else in the game? Absolutely not.
Like I said, If they only wanted us to raid they would have gotten rid of the battlegrounds, the PvP vendors, being able to do arena matches, taken out PvP servers among other things.

and what *exactly* is the purpose of pvp?
Grinding for gear.
The purpose is to give players another outlet to experience the game. Starting out it is about gear, but once you get gear the only thing left to do is prove your worth against other players. The top arena teams are like that because they practiced and know how to fight, not because they have better gear than the other team. And we know that because once you get that high, the gear is all on par with one another. The only thing that proves you're better is because you beat them.
Just because players only do arena to get a quick cap on Conquest so they can get gear, doesn't mean PvP only revolves around getting gear.
Do people like getting new and better gear? Of course we do. Do we solely focus on gear and nothing else in the game? Absolutely not.

I started playing WOW during TBC, patch 2.3 to be exact..
I was hooked and found myself playing at any given chance I could.. In the past year tho, I've come across moments while playing where I'm asking myself "What can I be doing right now with my toons?"
I've never really had to ask myself that but lately with me constantly not being around to play (job and gf), I find that I miss playing WoW on occasions but there are times that I don't miss it at all.
I've started playing BF3, and LoL on the side to break up the monotony of Achievement hunting and running randoms.. I also started lvling alts and have found myself entertained by that as I try and quest a different area each time I lvl an alt as to not do the same quests over and over.. I also try and knock out everything I can while lvling, different profs and things I never really liked lvling in the past (cooking, fishing)..
I'm really looking forward to Mists and all the changes, to me it seems like it's going to be a game changer.. Hopefully it is and everyone renews their "love" of the game..

Firstly congratz for sparking an interesting subject.
It seems that you have burned out and are just bored of the down period between patches. I'm exactly the same, I play the game to see the story progressing and I love having new things to experience. Like a few other people in this thread I have taken a fair amount of breaks during the time I've been playing, this has mainly been down to lack of a good guild paired with boredom and too much grind.
I'd say give WoW a break for a while, just wait for MoP to drop and then see if you fancy having a look around. Just remember to give it a chance when it's released and come back with a positive attitude. Who knows you might find that you really enjoy it again!
Good luck :)

So, I have a question.
What is it about WoW that sparks so many of these farewell letters on the board? Is this just something certain people feel they need to do in regards to WoW, or do I not visit enough game-centric sites? Does someone who was a CoD fan go to a CoD-related website they've never visited before to tell everyone there why they finally quit playing the series and am now into BF3?
I don't know the answer, but I have noticed certain traits among the "farewell bloggers". It usually comes out in the thread or their explanation that they got too addicted to the game and it consumed their life. It also can be gleaned from their post(s) that they tend to be on the younger side, by which I mean under 25.
Why do I bring up age at all? Well, it seems the new generation, through Twitter and Facebook and whatnot,
actually believe
the world is indeed salivating to know their every thought, motivation, and opinion on all topics. It might explain what would compel someone to join a community just to explain in a blog post why they left the game the community is formed around and what is wrong with it.
We are all human beings. The great, and maddening, thing about this is that we are all completely different, with a wide range of personal likes and dislikes. No one game is ever going to utterly satisfy all these diverse tastes and points of views, and definitely not for an extended period of time. The fact is that there are quite a number of people who enjoy WoW, for various reasons. You don't, for various reasons. OK then.
I'm really looking forward to Mists and all the changes, to me it seems like it's going to be a game changer.. Hopefully it is and everyone renews their "love" of the game..
This is also part of the problem. Look forward to MoP, but don't expect it to completely re-invent WoW. That is part of the problem: some people think a new expansion will make it an entirely new game. Blizzard is certainly updating some features and expanding some of the gameplay, but at the end of the day it is still WoW, just like it's been for years. Don't get your hopes too far up in the stratosphere or they will be dashed against the shores of reality when MoP is released, just like what happened to some when Cataclysm was released.
And then you'll be on here, writing a farewell blog.

But if you are quitting WoW, why do you want to continue to discuss it, as that could cause your addiction to spark back up; far better to just make a clean break.

That's not what i said at all. I clearly stated that I've been a member for a while, it's just that I've been posting everything about WoW up to this point on the Blizz forums, but now that I'm not a member, this is the new place where i've come to discuss WoW.
Wowhead is a community, separate from the official WoW forums. You just joined here recently (2/15/2012 to be exact, 9 posts - 8 of them in this thread) to tell a bunch of strangers why you decided to leave WoW and what is wrong with the game.
Did I still miss something?
