Wesley Snipes?

I think this is probably one of my favorite random conversation starters. It basically goes like this. Look at Wesley Snipes around the early 90's, a young black talented action/thriller star on the rise, who just happened to also be hilarous... but more importantly, a convincing BADASS.
By the time Blade had come and gone he was in a league of his own, Will Smith couldn't hold a candle to what Wesley Snipes did with martial arts (light) and attitude in his films and the only other person who I can think would be close, Denzel Washington, is DEFINITELY not an "action" star, he's just AWESOME. Which isn't what I'm aiming for here. Don Cheadle, also, not an "action" star.
So my question then... with Wesley Snipes essentially gone the way of Steven Seagul, Jean-Cladue Van Damme (i don't care if i'm misspelling these btw) and Sylvester Stallone... (in other words) GONE and off the reservation. WHO is going to be the next black American Action Movie Star? I propose, that NO ONE in Hollywood today can fill Blade's shoes. No one will probably do what Snipes did in the 90's.
With Statham, Worthington, and Bale doing awesomeness these days, not to mention Vin Diesel and The Rock (who are already growing out of their typecasts), there are PLENTY of White American Action Dudes.
So who is going to fill this spot?

I agree with the proposition that Steven Seagal was once the black American Action Movie Star.

I don't like Wesley Snipes. His movies are stupid. The only plot of him in his movies is him. They are big "look at me" fests. Hey guys, I made a movie that is nothing but 2 hours of looking at me do really totally awesome stuff, with absolutely no point. He isn't an actor. He's what I call a stunt single. You know how they have guys called stunt doubles that trade in for the actor JUST for the stunt? Well a stunt single is a guy who does stunts, but that's all he does. Those type of movies, mindless action, do not appeal to me. I like action, but I want my brain in it too. That's why I think Keanu Reeves is a better action star than Wesley Snipes, even though I think Snipes would kick Reeves butt IRL. The reason is that Reeves does movies that make you think, not just tributes to himself.
Steven Segal, Sean Claude Van Dam, Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Vin Diesel... all egotistical idiots. I don't care to watch them fight people for hours. That doesn't entertain me. The exception I can think of is Universal Soldier, that had a
slightly
engaging plot, but not really. Another thing is these guys all talk like they are badasses too. I don't really like that. It comes across as arrogant to me. Think of Arnold Swaartzeneggar... Terminator, True Lies, Eraser... Not the best movies, but they had good plots. Action stars that do movies with plots usually have better careers than self tribute actors. Think of Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Russel Crowe... all badasses that were WAY successful, because there was point to watching their movies.

Yup. Those actors are pretty much remnants of the plotless 90 flicks. The thing that made them badass were the cheesy, impossible fight scenes loaded with flashy effects and gun battles. I think the thing that made those movies popular was the fact that those effects were new. Now that we have CG effects, they're not as impressive as everyone knows they're "fake."
Look at Van Dam's movie plots. "I want revenge in this barren post-apocalyptic wasteland because this mean guy made me kill my family. WITH BARBED WIRE!"
That wouldn't fly with movies today, much less games.
Honestly, the only person whose movies I could go back and watch are Jackie Chan's. He did his stunts and if the fighting was cheesy, it was
intentional

I thought of him too. What I liked about him was his character was humble, and often put into humbling situations. He couldn't win every fight, and had to run away a lot. His movies weren't a tribute to himself, with scenes of impossible awesomeness that come across as stupid. The most important thing, was his fighting. It isn't just punching people in the face, breaking their arms, loading them into a cannon, and riding their bloody corpses into a fortress of foes. His fighting was creative, and fun to watch. He used props in ways that made it look like improve genius. It was entertaining beyond "how many goons are going to die in scene 25".
Edit: I think the biggest travesty of poor filmmaking is what Tom Cruise has done to the Mission Impossible movie series. Instead of really really cool choreographed plot strings (Oceans 11ish), you get scenes of Tom Cruise making love to lots of women, rock climbing, and base jumping. If I could get away with it, and if I had the opportunity, I would slap Tom Cruise for what he did to my beloved Mission Impossible. I'd slap him in the face.

I watched a Doco on the making of the Jet Li movie "The One".
They said in most fight scenes, they act them slowly, and then speed them up to make look more real and exciting.
In this movie, there is a scene where Jet Li is forced to fight himself from another universe, and they actually had to slow the film down, because some of his movements were so fast the human eye could not keep up.Yup.

I was about to name Jet Li but I always fall back to this
fight scene
. I mean it's cool and flashy but God does it look cheesy as hell.
It seems that Jet Li has dipped a bit into cheesy movies or wild plots.

As I said "intentionally cheesy." I realize those movies are from a time when CG was
first being introduced
but damn those movies don't age well to me. >.<
But really, I didn't mean to step on Jet Li. He's got some really good movies with some damn good choreography, it's only the fact that I had seen that scene recently.

I'm sorry i don't agree with this statement at all. Yes the blade movies are all about snipes being a badass, but i've yet to see a movie where reeves has impressed me as an action star. And the only thing i ever seem to think about when i'm watching keanu is that his range of emotion and acting skills has not improved since his days in Bill and Ted.
However, i will whole heartedly agree on the jackie chan and jet li comments. I'm a huge fan of both of them.
As far as the OP's question of whose the next black action star? i'm going to go waayyy out on a limb of getting flamed for saying this. But i think it'll be Will Smith's son Jaiden (however you spell his name). For someone whose never done martial arts in his life he did extremely well in the karate kid remake and his acting isn't too shabby either.

Considering most of the discussion has been about Asian action actors (read: non-white actors) I don't think that there HAS to be a black action star as it seems the OP has issue with there being a plethora of them.
In fact, it's probably better not to look at them as
colored
action stars but instead AS action stars. Just because there is a lot of white actors in a genre, it doesn't mean you have to balance it out with a black actor. Actors are chosen because of the talent they have. If you throw in a black actor just because there's a lack of one and he's not good with action films, he'll stick out like a sore thumb.
I find it odd that the OP discredits Denzel and Cheadle. They may not be martial artists or fight hand-to-hand in their movies but that doesn't mean they're out of the action genre. It seems OP wants a new black actor to make a 90s film again? People don't go for that anymore. Crank tried that and while it was a tiny bit refreshing, the sequel wasn't well-received at all.
P.S.
Samuel L. Jackson
Terrence Howard
Djimon Hounsou (If not
Blood Diamond
, then at least count
Never Back Down
or
Gladiator
.

Amazing. I'm so glad to see people putting their VERY own personal opinions in here... mind boggling. I love it! :-D

Samuel L. Jackson - Nope. He doesn't do action "sequences" like Snipes in Blade-ish. I meant more along the lines of someone with a career AHEAD of them also, not an accomplished career of badassimitude of hailing righteous wrath and judgement and purple light-sabers for like 30 years already. Lemme clarify SLJ = BADASS but not the Wes Snipes genre. He's like a black Tommy Lee Jones.
Terry Howard, good ole Terry... how did you @#$% up being in Iron Man! I was SHOCKED he didn't come back. Terrence Howard doesn't strike me as an imposing guy either. Too pretty. I'm thinking like a black equivalent of what Liam Niesen/Jason Statham/Sam Worthington are today, but yaknow, younger than Liam Niesen.... and probably nowhere near as good an actor... lol
The dude from gladiator is great but doesn't have any charisma, like if you took: him, the guy from Spartacus (and Jason X i recently realized!), and Will Smith(charisma only) and made them into somebody... that might be pretty effing badass... like Blade-ass. yeah. New word describing what i mean.
Laurence Fishbourne = Disqualified from any badass list for being VERY associated with Pee Wee's Playhouse. also he's too old
