I have no proof if Blizzard does market research, however one look at this
http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/atvi
proves they are doing something right.
Also job postings like this
https://blizzard.taleo.net/careersection/2/jobdetail.ftl
one would definately seem to indicate they do market research.

As the Original Poster I find it interesting that NO ONE has said that they have participated in a survey, been involved in a focus group, or more than speculation about how they datamine.
if their NDA is like the typical NDA I've had to sign for similar "focus groups" etc. you can't even say you've been to one.
I can only say I've been to such things, but not to which ones for example.
And no, they won't ask little kiddos who they can't trust to keep to their NDAs, which includes 99.999% of the typical forum users (and maybe 90% of the ones on this site).

They ask you why you are quitting when you stop your subscription.
So they will be getting lots of feedback at the moment.
No they dont ask. At least they didnt asked me. Atm I am not playing wow since few months due to real life.

I have seen example of their market research recently
Checkout
class feedback
forum on wow armory.
Dev question answers - its also one kind of market research.
Still be more specific which type of market research you want to justify.

Market = The people you think you have a reasonable chance of selling your product to.
Keep satisfy the current customers are also one purpose of market research. Company like Blizz make product like WoW once and for all after it they have to improve in each version(expansion).
Research = Gathering information.
Forums and open question answer is direct type of Market Research and its easy and bit accurate way of market research or gathering info.
Yeah its true their research strategy is narrowly focused on few things like forums and all.
Gathering information on the people you think you have a reasonable chance of selling your product to. Generally for the purpose of better tailoring the product, or the product's selling strategy, to the target market.
Thats why they launch small patches and do major changes in each expansion so we will continue our subscription. They always try to make WoW better in each expansion.
Its different thing Blizz lost lots customers recently even with their market research startegy. The reason for this could be bad interpretation of Market Research Data and not enough Market Research for specific customers(example: low skill players and clickers- cata PvE content was hard compare to WoLK expansion and many players didnt grasp new concept of cc, must have keybinding for few fights or huge aoe nerf)
Market Research is vast field - I always feel like still something is missing during market research. After launching product I always think - I should have researched in those fields too.
