I've been able to finish PuG MgT heroic everyday for the last few days on my druid alt (16.9k health unbuffed).MgT heroic is easier than normal (both pugs).
Seriously. The ones in heroic have done the instance before, the ones for normal haven't.

I fail to see how someone looking for a tank for their group wouldn't want to know about your gear. It's a pretty significant factor in determining how well you're going to do in an instance.
becoz:
1) do you ask your dps the same question?
2) most people set standards way too high, resulting in refusing a tank who might have been up to the tasks anyway
3) most people don't have the knowledge to interpreted the numbers.
4) a good tank is often used as excuse to slack. Why think your group is worthy a 16k health tank when you don't have 2000 AP, 900 spelldmg, ...
I've been known to armory DPS or bow out of a group if it's clear the DPS won't be able to make it an enjoyable run.
I can't help people who are unrealistic. My point still stands.
See #2.
Hrm, sort of the same thing, no?
I think my point is that if I've taken the time to gear myself up and make myself the best I can be for my progression, then I believe it is reasonable for me to want to group with people who have treated their characters with similar care.
To points 2 & 3, above: I can tell by the questions I'm being asked whether or not the person has a clue what s/he's saying. Similarly, if I don't know how to interpret numbers I'm asking for, I won't ask for them. So, let me rephrase my post:
I fail to see how there's a problem with determining the viability of a possible group member before accepting them your group.
I'm going to go with "determining the viability" implying the ability to interpret the results.

mgt is easy except for the third boss. like others said, if you get people with a clue, it's no problem at all.
so far i've cleared kael from 40-50% by myself twice (resto shaman 0/20/41 pvp spec lol)

it just depends on the players. cc or no cc.
i've tanked it with 3 shammys and a lock easily. (pally tank, but i am geared for BT and MH, which helps)
but when i have to pug i look at guild names, but it's usually a good thing if you know what the top guilds are.
pugs's just suck, 1 in 20 are good. i ended up in a group with a feral druid once in all greens who wanted to be a dps because they couldn't tank.
but the ones who make or break a group are the healer or tank, if i heal i always ask the tank questions, or if i tank i ask the healer, they are the most important 2

Successfully cleared this place in Heroic last night....
Group:
MT : Me (Prot warrior, 499 def. 12.6 k hp unbuffed)
Healer: Holy Pally
2 Mages ( Frost and Fire)
1 Warlock
Needless to say we did it in about 1 hour, the 3rd boss was cake, 2 sheep, 1 fear and 1 banish)
Good group = good run
As a main tank i know what i need for CC and dmg so finding and composing a group is never hard for me.
