I don't really know the respective original comics by Frank Miller, but compared to Sin City, 300 was just a cliche action movie.
About Raimi, you may like him or not, but him stepping down as director inevitably means that the movie is going to be released even later.

Ugh, I couldn't stand Sin City.
And I've already seen two warcraft movies that I bet will remain better than whatever they make: Illigal Danish, and Tales of the Past.

Well, there's a ton of depth in WoW lore for movie. Problem with movies based on games I see is the fact they always follow the main character(s) of the games. We've already formed our opinion on these characters and movies trying to keep those character intact can only hurt their own creativity.
The Resident Evil movies made their own character to play with. And she became the biggest Mary Sue in modern cinema...

Lord of the Clans, not Thrall.
To be succesful the movie will have to keep both horde/alliance as potential "good guys". While Arthas becomes the "bad guy". It would be Alliance heavy but that would be good for a first movie. It would establish what Azeroth was and is. The Thrall story could always be the follow up movie.Actually, Lord of the Clans happens before the meat of Arthas story.
I do not think Metzen would be happy though since Golden already outsells him on the bookshelf. Her writing style imho is far better for story telling.
Unless it's about romance...then she stinks up the joint.

Yeah but all of the stuff in Lord of the Clans happens 2-5 years before the start of Arthas down fall; if they were going to make movies based on the books, they should still go in order.

I am really torn on the idea of a Warcraft movie, as a fan of the game it I am both excited to see it happen and worried it won't translate well into a movie. My reason for this is books rarely make great movies I think because we all imagine the scenes differently when we read them. With this being the only exception I can think of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tough_Guys_Don't_Dance_
(film)
Also if the intention is to make the movie based on the game and not the books more questions arise. Would it be animated or live action, and if its animated would it be more PG then R rated?
All I know for sure is whomever is leading this project has a monumental task ahead of them. Making wow into a movie that will satisfy and entertain wow fans will be difficult enough, making the same movie appeal to and entertain people that have never even heard of wow will be even harder.

Wouldn't that be Day of the Dragon? For first book written or Rise of the Horde for Chronological? I don't know I may be wrong. There are quite a few.
War of the Ancients is the first series chronologically.
I just fear that they will present a story that fails to capture the essence of the game. My family did not see anything wrong with the John Carter movie but for some reason it is considered an epic fail. A wow movie based on a random alliance hero who fights the evil horde may have some unhappy results from players and fans. Changing lore at this point also potentially risks losing a huge part of fans who will be dissapointed with the change.See, this is all that's known about the movie: Original information we knew about the film:
1. Thrall will be in it some capacity.
2. Takes place in the four years between Third War/Frozen Throne and WoW.
3. Is a War movie.
4. Varian like clone. It's still way too early to figure out what is and isn't going to happen. Myself, I'd rather have it as an original adventure thing; something that could add in new lore to the expanded universe.

Well, they've got a writer now apparently
Charles Leavitt
; as I haven't watched Blood Diamond or K-Pax, can't really say much in regards to this.
Also, apparently Legendary Pictures is also looking to do a Mass Effect movie....hurrah?
