I think this is why the game is getting boring for some. Everyone predicts what Blizzard is going to do with the next patch/expansion. Like stockpiling ore thinking epic gems with be prospected from them.
Now if they want to make a change and try to freshen up the game a little bit, everyone #$%^&es because they can't follow through with their get rich quick scheme.

PVP, well who says there won't be parallel gems coming out sometime? Besides if PVPers want then, they can do as they say "easy scripted mouther breathing fights that never change" for gems. I bet even PVP raid bosses (BH) will start dropping them! Welcome to the new "care-bear" world! Ya, I hate PVP and all the things it has done to this game...
So far there is no indication that epic gems will come from PvP in some form. PvP-ers who doesn't do raids are avoiding them for more reason then just 'easy scripted fight'. Some just don't have the time needed to raid on a schedule, some just don't like it.
For me, I don't like it, it bores me. But I am not trying to QQ about the fact that JC got screwed over (or miners for that matter - no epic gem prospects = less demand for ore = less money for each ore = less incentive for miners to mine). I am trying to point that this design caters to the raiders, not the casual players or pvp only players. Imagine the uproar if epic gems only dropped from a bag which you receive only when winning rated BG or arena. Do you think that's fair too? Or because you love raiding, but hate PvP all the sudden the picture changes?
Oh well, I guess I'll start making belt buckles instead. :D
I wouldn't do that if I were you. 40 stacks is not that big investment, besides 4.3 is not out yet. They have plenty of time to do the 'right' thing and allow prospecting epic gems from ore. The raiders can keep their bags with the chance to drop epic gems - that's would be a drop in the bucket.
The best design so far was the one in Wrath - epic gems from prospecting, epic gems from JP and honor and epic gems from transmutes, so everybody is happy.

I think people have not really noticed that other professions are still profitable, but JCing has declined very much so.
I see posts saying about Inscriptors and the permanent glyphs, thats not the only thing they can make darkmoon cards and for some people the addictive mysterious fortune cards are a money maker.
Alchemy has had a nice amount of stuff to make money from Truegold will still be a money earner, as is the Vial of the Sands.
Enchanting will always have their Weapon enchants to fall back on.
Of course the other armor crafting skills get even more money making plans etc to enjoy selling for huge profits.
Jewelcrafting though has been stagnant, just have to see the price of Stam gems to realise that. Only the few useful red gems are still in a sense "profitable" but requires a lot more sales compared to others.
Now for blizz to potential ruin a JC'ers ability to propsect the gems and also potentially limit a JC'er to having to find a book drop (no concrete evidence yet of buying them with tokens) to learn the designs, they have essentially killed off JCing as a primary crafting skill.
Now I have seen people say "JCers will have to buy the gems from the AH and cut and resell at a larger profit" or "Sell a cut for 500g", but the reality is since its difficult already to make money from JCing right now, people who get the drops (if they are only drops in raids) will sell the uncut gems for silly prices that will make it hard for the JC'er to actually buy regularly. Especially those who don't get to raid regularly either.
If they don't allow prospecting there will be a massive amount of negative posts on the forums, or you may find that JC'ers in revenge will start selling the cuts for massive costs more than the 500g people suggested, very likely many times more.

I am a JC . I cant see what you are all QQing about -- we may not be able to supply the gems ,but it is only A JC who can supply the cut . I will be cutting them for 1k plus . Will have to organise the servers JCs just like we did with the servers BSs when the firelands patterns came out so all are charging the same .
Wont be as easy as it was with the BS orb price ( any BS that were selling orbs lower than our group we got them to make items for us and sold for a profit --thus using up their cheaper orbs ) . You cant do this with cutting as it doesnt consume the resource but it will be worth a try .

I think that was one major problem with the downfall of JC prices was Alchemists able to make Inferno Rubies en masse with no CD.
Because Inferno Rubies are so difficult to prospect and more gainable from Fire Prisms, their price is obviously higher for cut and uncut versions. But since Alchemists can cheaply make them the prices have plummeted and have ruined the profession's ability to generate gold.
Now with a distinct chance JC'ers can't prospect and Alchemists can transmute the red epic gem, its going to get even worse. As Wombat pointed out and myself, the cut fee's will be sky high.... well will be if JC'ers are lucky enough for the Agility, Strength etc designs are gained early.
Blizzard should have left the Blue and Epic gems to the prospecting, Diamonds (Meta's) fair enough for Alchemists, but not our own gems!
Whats next they will be able to transmute Cloth and Leather?
