Have you not been paying attention to what Blizz has been talking about with the tank changes coming up? They are significantly reducing the importance of threat, and having tanks forcus more on active damage mitigation. If implemented properly, I think it will make tanking much much more forgiving, more fun, and more people will probably try the role.
I dunno. Active mitigation will make tanking more "interesting" for sure, but probably only for those people who are already tanks. If anything it would raise the Skill Cap for tanking, making bad tanks even worse in comparison.

try balancing that in pvp
Yeah, exactly right. In my opinion, tanking is fine right now, it's just the community that is off. Leveling another tank recently, I realized (yet again) there is little actual tank gear available to tanks who are leveling. Blizzard has done a nice job of adding in tanking BoA's though, just bites when you roll on a new server and don't transfer a toon with BoA's in their possession.
yup. Levelling a tank right now. Spent most of my time tanking in dps gear, except the few ranges where there's craftable tank gear available.
What ruins the experience for many people are heirlooms. Not tank heirlooms, but dps and heal heirlooms.
These allow others to completely ignore you in all instances up to about lvl75, making the new tank feel utterly useless (and he'll in randoms be told so in no uncertain terms more often than not) and leaving her with no way to practice her skills.
I (and most people I know) couldn't care less about pvp, balancing classes, or all the other crap OP talks about but doesn't have a clue what he's saying.
Tanks aren't about topping the dps meters, they're about staying power. That's why people love a tank in region for group quest, that's why tanks can solo things without breaking a sweat that takes other classes several tries and wipes before they figure it out.
Sure, I'm not doing 5k dps at lvl80, but 1.5k. But that doesn't mean I take 3 times or longer to do anything, I can complete a lot of quests almost as quickly (not even taking those wipes into account that other classes have to deal with) as others can.
The problem is thus not how tanks work, it's people. People don't want a role for some reason that's not "ueber" according to the dps meters.

Put yourself in the shoes of raid boss. Youll have like seven or eight people behind you stabbing you furiously with knives and daggers, poisoning you, as well as hammering away on your butt and lower back with massive sledgehammers and axes. All around you are people shooting arrows in your face, electrocuting you and burning you with gigantic balls of fire that explode constantly in your face.
Your ears are ringing from explosions, you feel excruciating pain from thousands of wounds and you feel the constant impacts of blunt objects hammering you hard from the back of your head down to your heels, your hair is on fire, your body shakes and your muscles cramp and spasm involuntarely from the constant electrocution. Poison course through your veins, you feel sick from disease, you stumble around on the floor which has gotten slippery from your own blood, running in rivers from several wounds, and your new clothes are all messy and torn.
Then there is one guy, right in front of you, mocking and taunting you, calling your mother a prostitute, spitting in your face while stabbing you repeatedly in your gut with a sword while bashing your face in with a heavy metal shield. That guy is closests, that guy is all you see in your tunnel vision of pain, blood pours down your face, blurring your vision and that guy just laughs in your face and keeps stabbing you. Offcourse you want to beat that guy, and beat him hard. Do you care about the five people in colorful dresses standing scattered around? No, not particularly. The guy thats in front of you is the one you are most angry with, that guy has to go down.
I'm in love
That's the most beautiful thing I've ever read. :*)

Threats not broken I had a tank in some healer gear in a heroic and was doing 9 times the damage he tank was literally and quess how much I got threat. None I glowed once and that was it.
You're lucky then because I just did a heroic with a paladin tank who was wearing spirit/int gear and all I had to do was use my horn of winter and I pulled threat off of him.
simple answer: don't do dps in blood presence...

Tanks aren't boring, I play my low level warrior sometimes and it's fun as hell to play as a tank, the chaotic feeling, the feeling of needing to do your job great, the total awesomeness of taking hits right to you on purpose and having to actually be awake when you play a tank is a great thing for me who usually plays a DPS class.

technically speaking there's a lot of RPGs that do not use tanks and work just fine (Shin Megami Tensei, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Diablo, ect) but those work because they have been built from the start to not depend on threat mechanics.
Wow already was built to depend on that, and to make such a gigantic change wouldn't sit well with the game, itemization, and the way TONS of bosses are already built. In an RPG the only vital role is healer, since people inevitably will take damage, but the need for tanks can be revoked by having the bosses just attack whoever is the highest DPS, and rather than do a fixed amount of damage, have it do a % of your max HP. That way he'd hit a plate user just as hard as a clothie.
in paper it sounds easy, but in practice this is NOT easy to balance in an MMO. It may be somewhat easier if its a new one, but if its a game like wow that has skirted around tanks since its inception....... nope, not gonna work.
