If TOR ends up tanking, I swear I cannot even describe my future laughter... until Hyper yells at me to stop.
That said, I still don't see how anything but WoW could kill WoW at this point... and don't get me wrong; Blizzard is doing a pretty damn good job there.
The problem is, these "WoW killers" don't have what WoW does; an established fanbase, an experianced crew behind raid and endgame design, ect, ect.

if every game started there mmos like blizzard they would all do just as well. start with rts with a story line to build plots that can be used in the mmo. stor is the exception since it has so many books/movies graphic novels that thers already a huge fan base. stor wont kill wow but it will put a dent. more like another 100k. if anything is to kill wow it will be over time not a direct and complete kill. its gonna be a long and slow rend that re applied multiple times.

I think Star Wars is different enough that WoW and it can coexist.

I plan on playing both. Right now I split my time between WoW and EQ2. I'll probably drop the EQ2 for SWTOR, but still do whatever dailies or events they keep adding in WoW.
I find it funny how territorial MMO players get over "their" game. Every time a new MMO comes out, all the WoW players get up in arms about how it's trying to kill WoW, and how miserably it will fail, and how horrible a game it will be. If you say the word WoW in EQ2 general chat, people will flame about how if you want to play a game, then play it and shut up about it, and blah blah blah. If you look on the SWTOR forums, people are all snidely remarking on every suggestion that reminds them of WoW that this isn't going to be WoW 2, and how they can't stand how many WoW players this is drawing. Can't there be multiple good games of the same or similar genres?

But but but...

Well I haven't played WoW since March. I got into the ToR beta a couple weeks ago and here I am back on WoW. I needed to refresh myself with a decent MMO after trying out that rubbish.

But it IS just another WoW clone. I don't want to take anything away from the game, it will stand on its own, but even with the Star Wars universe at their disposal they decided to take the well-traveled path that Blizzard blazed. They could have done so much more, but instead they made a Star Wars-based WoW with voice overs that just get tedious.
Playing the beta did two things for me:
1. It confirmed my dislike of Bioware.
2. It made me realize that as far as Star Wars goes, I only care about the original trilogy. I don't care about any lore outside those movies, especially if it has more in common with episodes 1-3.

Like another person posted...Star Wars has an established story line, one that goes back much further then WoW and I think that's the key. That the large core of Star War follower are adults and those that are MMO players carry a financial strength capable of tipping the scale away from WoW.
Many of the younger players who are playing with parents and reliant on them to pay for it, will have to go along with them should they make the switch.
Aion..Rift..etc were always treated as "I'll check it out" attitude by players I came into contact on a daily basis.
Star Wars is the first I am seeing as being waited on with anticipation by those same people.
Using just the smallest sample..I have a couple of family members who have played WoW since 2008. They would always hinted(not so subtle) for a game card on every gift giving occasion.
They both have birthday's coming up soon. This time around they are not hinting for a game card...they are asking for a pre-order of SWTOR.
Making a personal assessment, I think there are a couple of things to watch for. One is how those players that do leave affect those that are staying. Guilds that are progressing may find themselves bereft of members to continue progressing. Will the reshuffling of rosters and the demand for recruits from a smaller pool, create a frustration level that could further exasperate the desire to keep playing.
The other thing I will keep an eye on is the addon field. I've always stress to friends that watching how addons are created, supported and updated is the key to the strength of the community.
Should we begin to see addons, especially the major ones, begin to lose their support and become outdated, then as the expression goes "Houston...we have problem"
Finally I'm just curious as to what WoWhead has planned in regards to SWTOR, if anything.

you know, thecnically speaking, TOR already as prequels.
The KOTOR saga is directly tied to the TOR game. Even though its based 300 years later, and thus Revan and the Exile wont be showing up, nor will bastila or HK-47 (What a shame U_U ) what they did IS referenced in the game, and a franchise as rich as Starwars already has a well established canon and lore behind it.
In order for that game to NOT tank it has to be handled well (With silk gloves) by the creators, because just being based off starwars aint enough to warrant a success. Heck, Star Wars Galaxy rings a bell?
This game is made by Bioware, GODS of RPGs (they put blizzard to shame when it comes to making successful RPGs, with a repertoire as large as Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire) That being said, those best-seller games bioware has made are all single-player only, its not the same to make an MMO-RPG, that would be their first.
So for now, its up in the air if this will be a decent competitor to wow. However, given the MASSIVE advantage wow has, its unlikely that any online game will be the "wow-killer" a game with this much popularity can only be killed off by its creators

Rodney King once asked "can't we all just get along"
I think by now its pretty clear the answer is
NO

Well, long as it's Bioware alone and not LucasArts forcing them to rush the game; that's why KotoRII wasn't as great as it could have been, but at least for that, you can get some mods to help you get the rest of the removed storylines.
