Farming is for the middle class. Buy low, sell high. That's how rich people play the stock market and look: they're rich.

Yes, but that's riskier, especially for a beginner at the AH. I've bought things before that my scans indicated should be sold at at least double the value I bought them for, but I wasn't aware that those items weren't moving anymore. It took me weeks to unload them and my profit was severely diminished after taking into account the eventual lower-than-expected sale price and the deposits for listing and relisting.

What kind of items does this work best with? Mats or what?
Most items really, but you really want to pick an area and watch it carefully for a week or two first, don't rely on addons, get to know the market values in a sector then you can recognise the bargains and act accordingly.
Oddly enough I think the best way to start this is by farming and selling stuff, or crafting and selling, you soon begin to become aware of prices of stuff you are dealing in all the time, then you have the knowledge to snap up the low priced stuff when you see it.

Anything that sells. In-demand materials can make a nice chunk of change, but the real money comes from flipping BoE epics. If you recognize a piece as a resto druid chest, it's far riskier to try flipping that as compared to a DPS caster cloak (it has a larger market). I made some nice coin after FL became available just by picking up a 378 weapon for 25k and selling it for 30k the next day. I realize you have to work your way up to this, but you'll be rolling in gold once you do.
Get to know a market sector and take note if it seems that sector is moving large volumes. A little profit off of a lot of sales is just as important as a lot of profit off of one sale.

You'd be surprised how many players put up epic gear at very low prices.
If you have a couple thousand gold under your belt, check the AH every now and then. You could pick up a bargain and re-sell it at a higher price.
