Had a little discussion in a Pug when a twohander dropped. I, as prot warrior tanked, and a two handed weapon dropped from a za chest, and a dual wield deathknight claimed he had more right to that weapon since it is a dps weapon and he is playing the role of dps. We both needrolled it, i won.
But in my opinion, as he is using onehanders to dps (he had double trash run swords, forgot the name of that item, so its not a "upgrade" for his dps) that 2h drop is a offspec drop for both of us, and we have equal rights to needroll on it, whoever wins it wins it.
he claimed his specc was dps, not restricted to a few talent points, but in the role of dps he should get prio on dps items. I claimed his specc was "dps with onehanders", and that i have equal rights to twohanders since twohanders is offspecc items for both of us.
My real offspecc is singleminded fury, so technically its my off-off-specc, but he didnt know that, and i would have passed it to him instead if he didnt act as such a elitist-jerk- tard throughout the instance. I tanked flawlessly and the run went very smooth, yet he seemed obsessed with pointing out that i was wrong in having deep wounds and cruelty and not some other talents, and that the healer was awful because he had 2 piece pvp gear in pve.
But ranting aside, has a smf warrior or a dual wielding deathknight more right to roll for twohanders than a pally or warrior tank?

Personal opinion: It should be equal, as both were off-specs.

But does an off-off-spec have more priority over an off-spec?
For example, does dodge leather go to the kitty DPS or the healer with kitty DPS offspec? Arguably, it goes to the kitty DPS, whose can at least use it in that spec.

True, but neither of them were specced FOR 2h weapons in the first place. I think that both of them rolling would be equally fair.

Dungeon? Everyone who can use it (and it's an upgrade for 'em, MS or Off) can and will roll on it. In Raids, unless there's an agreement beforehand that someone in the raid absolutely needs the next drop and only that (and will not leave once they get it), it's MS first, OS last, and always forwhatever you are in that fight you're currently doing. I'd have people whining to roll on MS stuff when they are asked to OS for a certain encounter. "We need three tanks for Lady Deathwhisperer." Someone is third tank. "Oooh~ dropped! I wanna roll on it!" /sigh

In this case, it has allways been customary to allow the player to roll on their "main" spec, if they were asked (forced) into a different role for 1 fight. On the same note, they don't get to "dual roll" though. In your case, if they were a MS DPS that was asked to tank, they roll MS on DPS gear, and have to take OS for tank drops.
As for the OP....first, with this being both a PuG, and only a 5 man....pretty much anything goes...if you can equip it, and its an upgrade, I say roll Need. If you don't, someone else likely will. I hate to have that attitude, but its the harsh reality, and after having 2 359 Tank shields needed then ninja-logged by healers, I have pretty much adopted this rule. Aside from that, I believe you were correct, seeing as the DK's spec made the 2H just as much of an OS roll as yours.

I'm fine with it. I can tell from the fact it was a ZA twohander its the reforged trollbane which the reason the dk wanted it obviously was for blood offspec as it is BiS pre raid tanking wep and as you said he was dual wielding soul blades as a dw speced frost dk. He was just trying to use his class as an excuse to get it over you despite wanting it for his OS as well.

In a pug, if you're not specced for it right this instant, it's an off spec roll and anything goes. Tough crap if you're a DK or SMF warrior; if you're not going to put the weapon to either immediate, or almost immediate use, then you can't simply claim it on the grounds that "you'll use it eventually" and expect to get away with being the only one rolling on it.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying here. The cat can use it, yes, but that's like asking if the parry-mastery plate should go to the ret pally or the frost DK. It's gear that's for their class, not spec, regardless of how you cut the cake, so neither should have priority. Besides, when did cats start going after dodge leather other than for some seriously large upgrades? o.O...

Yes, but I pointed out that unless it was agreed upon before they actually switched specs, put on their OS gear, started the fight, did what they were supposed to, ect, generally people would only be able to roll on the gear that belonged to their
current
spec for good reason. We had a dedicated tank in our guild who ran ICC as much as I did and yet the damn shield from Gunship
never
dropped for him. It dropped for my rarely used Prot OS, it dropped for the Prot pally who didn't really raid all that much, and the one time it had dropped, another tank rightfully won it in a roll. That was before the endless streak of it not dropping for him, but still. We in the guild agreed that if the H version of the shield dropped, even if he was in his OS Fury set or whatever, he gets it, no questions asked. The only real issue I have is that people expect everything even when it's stated (repeatedly) how the basic system works (which can vary from raid to raid or server to server).

Yes, in your case...and in many guild runs, loot rules get bent for several reasons. In your case, you were doing what was right, both for the betterment of the guild, and to help a buddy.
I ran an alt with another guild for about 3 months in ICC, and they ran straight Loot Council...no rolls at all for main spec, only open off spec rolls. And out of all those runs, I dont think I ever saw a single player get butthhurt over gear. Gear was distributed with a combination of who needed an upgrade, who had been awarded gear recently, and by what roles / players needed propped up to help the group advance. And I have to admit, they did it as fairly as it could have been done. I think the biggest help was that all loot rules were VERY clearly discussed both in vent and in open chat before each run was huge factor as well.
love the "if an upgrade i'm gonna need on it regardless of my role" mentality. so if i'm tanking and a tank piece drops and a dps role for off spec its ok? why not que as a tank? so that "dps" needing on tank gear wants to get carried cuz he is too much of a chicken sh!t to que as a tank.
Yes, I pretty much have this attitude in pug runs now, but it wasn't always that way. After the 3rd time I had a major upgrade BoE epic snatched from me, I gave up. If I need it, or its valuable, Im rolling need. You can direct your complaints to Blizz on this one. The final straw was after having every member of the group type in chat that all would roll greed on an item, and high roll would win, then having 4 out of 5 greed, and a Shammy roll need on a tank shield.....I was done. I reported it to Blizz, wrongly assuming that the chatlog would be evidence of scamming, and was told that this action did not violate their rules. So my mentality now when it comes to loot is that I trust no one. The best I do is I will try to Need as fast as possible so my intentions are known.

Ummm alot of guilds use Loot Council as a very successful way to distribute loot and it doesn't cause any issues. Hmmm 2 people could use this item, loot council decides that person a should have it as they havent gotten loot yet and its a bigger upgrade rather than, hmmm its an upgrade for both of you /roll for it..... As long as people are fair in a loot council it works fine.

Ah... I'm not laughing @ the idea of Loot Council, I'm laughing at the fact that it reminds me of the Blood Princes from ICC. They eventually became so easy for our guild that we called it "Loot Council". Half the stuff was DE'd. Just like Loot Ship on H mode... <3~
