He wasn't alive; he was dead. His final demise was finished when he put on the Helm of the Damned.

He is dead when he talks to his father? "Father, is it over?" He seems pretty much alive in that scene.
Yes; as he is an Undead already: His words to his father are his 'dying' declaration.

Pay attention to the words we are saying: Arthas was dying the instant he picked up Frostmourne. So, all through WC3 and TFT, he was steadily becoming an Undead and when he put on the Helm of the Damned and the Armour of Damnation, he ceased to live and was raised up as a Scourge. When we defeat him at the end of ICC, he has been dealt his death blow, the one that will send him on to whatever reward awaits him, and in his last dying moments, he speaks to his father.

But didn't Arthas die already when he pulled out his own heart? You can't live without a heart.
This is a videogame.

The Lich King
That's the NPC in ICC. Notice how it's UNDEAD? I would assume that he doesn't really care a bout silly things like vital organs.

Or not. Just because that's what we'd like to think doesn't change the fact it was ret-conned.

Welp, according to what Funden linked...says undead so that wasn't retconned: Just the fact that a small piece of the original soul of Arthas somehow survived and made the 'good' strong enough to keep the Scourge from somehow crushing the world......even though we spent the expansion wiping out the forces and what was rebuilt in the citadel still wouldn't have been enough to destroy Azeroth.

Never said he wasn't Undead. And yeah, that small Arthas thing was a total retcon. I'm not sure which annoyed me more, that, or the fact that The Lich King was somehow holding back the Scourge and that we couldn't survive a Scourge assault...

So how did you get his name right in this topic but not in your username?

As for where he went after he died, there was a big fuss about that, with Arthas fans hoping that he could be redeemed and sent to Warcraft heaven because "it wasn't his fault he was corrupted" and me hoping he was slowly flayed by the Legion because I'm still bloody pissed about how casually sarcastic he was when he killed Uther. "I guess we'll never know, I don't intend to die..." my ass, I killed you, you massive ass-hole!
Ahem...
In all likelihood, though, he was either annihilated completely or sent to Warcraft Purgatory. Hence the "only darkness before me."

I'm more interested in what happened to the actual body, and to the shards of Frostmourne. Speaking about his soul, technically it was absorbed when he picked up the sword, and thus released upon its shattering. I'm hoping that it - the soul - is sent to Purgatory with a chance of redemption,
so that we never ever see or hear of Arthas again.
He's dead dead. Leave the poor bastard alone.
