I'm confused about gemming...

Hey guys, like the title says, I'm soooo confused about gemming. I'm a noob at end game tanking in general. I read the guides, and I'm still confused. I want to start tanking heroic 5 mans soon, and some of the pieces are temporary until I can get some new 346 pieces, and I haven't enchanted yet... Still grinding, but what kind of gems would be best for my gear considering ? Thanks.

Its pretty simple
Red slot: parry/mastery
Blue: stam/mastery
Yellow: Mastery
Go for the socket bonuses on your gear. As for other things try to change up your weapon, the epic pvp weapon might be great for dps in comparison to 346 weapons, but Something like Wild Hammer heroic from Erudax in Grim Batol would be much better. Also with your reforges, don't reforge into hit. I haven't really looked over it that much but thats my initial feelings on the matter.

Red: expertise/mastery
Blue: hit/mastery
Yellow: mastery
Everyone agree's on yellow sockets.
My reasoning for blue sockets, who needs extra stamina? I mean honestly, i have zero stam gems and im sitting above 150k unbuffed and close to 200k with raid buffs. And while hit rating isn't huge anymore, i think .5% chance to hit is better than an extra 1k health from stam/mastery gems.
Heres is my argument for red sockets. Everyone has more parry rating than dodge rating, which means DR is hitting your parry rating fairly hard. That extra 20 parry rating is probably closer to 10-15 after DR hits it. Expertise soft cap is pretty easy to hit with expertise/mastery gems and a couple reforges. You end up losing around 1.5% avoidance, and gain 13% increased chance to land a DS at a critical moment.

Well there are things that stamina helps with such as still surviving hits, if he makes a mistake and stands in a zanzil fire for a couple seconds, the difference between two ticks of damage screwing him over or being healed through is how much stam he has. Also with swordshattering you are supposed to have around 4% higher parry as there is 4% unaffected by dr from the rune. My dk has 0% hit 21 exp in tank gear with no gem or reforge for them and doesn't have any problems with threat except occasionally at the start of a trash pull where a hunter uses multishot spam and seems to have forgotten that he can misdirect instead of taking aggro off the pull.

150k unbuffed? Do you use stamina trinket? If you are so fond of expertise, just use expertise/hit trinket.
You dont need additional stamina because you are deliberatly gimping yourself with stamina trinket.
Just get Licence to Slay or Heart of rage, reforge to mastery if you love that caps so much.
I use what i have available to me. The trinkets i currently have are the best i have been able to get so far. It's not a secret that good tanking trinkets are currently not very abundant.
Even if i didn't have 1 stam trinket, id be at 145k health unbuffed, and id still think .5% hit rating is a better investment than 1k health.
This is so off topic, this is not about me, my character, or trinkets. its about gemming.

But my trinket is not the topic of discussion. My gemming is.
So how about you stay on topic?
I gave my argument for why i believe you should gem for expertise over parry and hit over stamina.
If you believe 1k health should take priority over .5% hit, or that 1.5% avoidance should take priority over 13% chance to land a strike, then make that argument.

You have 2 options as a tank for a gem with mastery on it that matches a blue socket. Stamina or hit. If dodge was a choice, obviously it would be picked over hit and stamina, but its not.
So no i wouldn't use a hit rating trinket over a stamina trinket when i can use an avoidance or mastery trinket. But those are not options for mastery gems that match a blue socket.

You picked hit over stamina in gemming, but you "obviously" prefer not to pick hit over stamina in trinkets. What does it tell us about your gemming strategy?
It tells me these are the current blue gems with mastery on them:
Puissant Dream Emerald
Sensei's Dream Emerald
Zen Dream Emerald
And since spirit does not effect our class in any way. That leaves Hit or Stamina.
If dodge was an option, then i would probably say take the dodge/mastery green gem. But it's not. I work with what blizzard gives me.

Tbh, if you're still gearing up and still sitting at 333-346 gears i suggest put stam gems and while you're farming gears be sure to pick a gear with mastery in it and regems as your gears improve as stated above.

Its clear you prefer hit over stamina in gems, yet somehow this preference doesnt apply to your trinkets.
Why dont you use
License to Slay
instead of that awful stamina trinket? Or some blue hit/exp trinket.
This is what i am asking. Guess the on use effect is so great for you.
Why in gemming hit is better than stamina, yet in trinkets you choose to use supbar stamina trinket over so much more prefered (by you) hit trinket? Its not that its hard to obtain*. Plus are are many other non-stamina possibilities.
Porcelain Crab
is imba.
* - looking at the 5k Valor points obtained 12h ago, i may change this statement. Its actually is beyond your reach. Viable hit/exp alternatives:
Magnetite Mirror
Might of the Ocean
PS: I dont see us going anywhere near agreement, so lets finish this.
Zakkhar, wtf are you talking about. The fact he has a stam trinket himself(which can be for 1000 reasons, and I can understand he prefers to use valors for t11 or so and is still farming for Porcelain crab) doesnt change anything about what hes saying.

He claims he preferes dodge, exp and hit over meaningless stam, yet uses stamina trinket when there are (blue) hit/dodge/exp trinkets available.* It changes everything. I am not picking any fights, i am stating the facts. Every time he responds he completely ignores the facts. he never said - "i am currently using stam trinket because i have bad luck in dropping anything else." He said "I am using stamina trinket and even if i didint blah blah blah.."
* i know crab maybe not the easiest (33 runs on my DK), but for his strategy there are other blue options i named.
You say your not picking fights, and yet you completely ignore sections of my responses. My very first response to you was "I use what i have available to me." If i had a better trinket drop for me, id be using it. Would you prefer i just left my second trinket slot empty because nothing would be better than contradicting my gemming preferences? I mean you make absolutely zero sense whatsoever. Also i use it much less because it has stam, and more because it has an avoidance mechanism to it. If i had my preference, it would have mastery on it instead of stam, but i don't work for blizzard, i don't get to tailor make every item to fit my whims.
All of my responses have been to try and answer your "facts", and yet you keep ignoring them and rambling on anyhow like you want to pick a fight.
Also this topic is about GEMMING, not trinkets. It's also not about my character or what items i do and don't use or what items have and have not dropped for me. If you want to discuss the merits of tanking trinkets, why don't you create a new thread called "tanking trinkets" and discuss at length which ones you think are best and why.

You are picking fights. If some guy tells you to stop driving through red lights and the next day you see him ignoring a stop sign that doesnt mean you can drive through any red light you want.
