Preposterone - Orc Death Knight. Love this name. Reference to PowerThirst. During my mid-Wrath hiatus, my account got compromised and he got shuffled off to Malorne, and in the mean time someone created another Preposterone on my home server. :( When I got him back to Icecrown, I had to name him Valfodr (one of Odin's name, Father of the Slain). Some point before Cata dropped, I noticed the name was open again, so I changed it back.
Preposterous amounts of testosterone!
Nice name. :) Makes me want to roll a Druid named Humpcatting.

Gnub
My naming goes with a long history, but I'll make it short.
Gnuliath
- My first main, named after my paladin in Diablo 2, which was also my first (and only) level 99. It was originally named after some hilarious image i saw on a site, and is obviously a name for a Gnu Goliath. I had him until Burning Crusade hit - and by then the Gnu name had stuck. Gnub too, when I messed up.
Tawalceb
- A warrior I made to help me keep my economy going. Farming at its finest. Was named when I during a trip to London figured that it was really needed, found the manufacturer of the train I was in at the time of my realization (
Beclawat
). I wanted him to have the claw-set from Molten Core at the time. So sexy. For some reason, he got the nickname "Towelhead". When I moved to Horde, the nightelf was made into Milkshaker, the female tauren... I actually miss the name a bit though.
Gnub
- Originally my Draenei Shaman was named "Gnubigena", when I made him. It was both a nice draenic feel to it, had "Gnub" in it, but was mainly made form the latin "Nubigena", which means "Born of a Cloud". I found that fitting both for a shaman, and from the draenei origins.
Subwoofer
- A druid alt I later made, which... well, was actually only made because I made such an immense amount of puns with one of our druids, which had a name that started with "Sub". I guess it would've been funnier if he was Worgen now, but yeah :P
That's all I can think of at this moment.

I try to name my alts after brands of beer. troegs, lambic, hoegaarden, brokenrake, flyingdog, octoberfest etc.
Irishsnout is really a play on stout beer (my favorite). When I pound irish carbombs the foam gets on my nose = irishsnout.

My character names always have a meaning, even if they end up being unintentional.
Some of my favorites over the years:
-Kazimir. Means 'destroyer of peace'. He was a Forsaken Rogue.
-Ghislain. My current Rogue, a Worgen. The name can mean 'hostage' or 'pledge', I choose the 'pledge' version, and made him a member of SI:7 in the backstory that resides in my head. It also works well with his cover ID, a tinkerer and maker of toys, proprietor of 'Ghislain's Ghismos'. :)
-Margaux. A variant of Margaret, which means 'Pearl'. She's Ghislain's sister, an Arcane mage, and a total magic geek.
-Svanhild. Means 'battle swan'. She's my Human Paladin, Protection spec of course. Also notable for being the daughter of Sigurd and Gudrun in Norse mythology.
-Varushka. My Draenei Hunter. The name doesn't have a real-world analogue, but it sounds so delightfully Russian, and as I found out soon after creating her, is remarkably similar to 'Veruchka', which is a diminutive form of Vera, which means 'True'.
And the most recent addition to the family, Greebo. He is a Worgen Druid, and his only spec will be feral DPS. I stay in cat form as much as is possible. Either you will get this name, or you won't. :)
Final note:
Behind the Name
is a FANTASTIC resource for creating character names. And I imagine parents might find it handy too, I suppose.

I do this with Varushka's pets! They're all named after alcohols. Zyr (Russian vodka brand, polar bear), Guinness (my wolf), Barbancourt (Jamaican rum, Sambas), Goldschlager (Pogeyan), Merlot (purple firefly from Zangarmarsh). It's fun trying to come up with appropriate liquors for the pet. For instance, I haven't gotten him yet, but Terrorpene will most likely be named 'Toddy'.

I think one of the things goblin use the most are fuses and bombs. Thus, Blastfuse.

After about 2 years of playing, I decided to theme my toons names. I only name-changed one, which was my original first toon. All others I ended up re-rolling new toons to get the names I wanted. What I ended up with is:
Shadowsfall : Warlock
Mollyhatcet : Pally
Judas : Priest
Ironmaiden : Warrior
Coldplay :Mage
Steppenwolf : Hunter
Nazerath : Death Knight
Halestorm :Shaman
I chose all band names, not necessarily all bands I am even fans of, but that had some connection to each class in some way. I am still searching for a good name for my druid and rogue. I had picked Godsmack for my rogue, but, while I think its a cool band and cool name, it really just isn't quite "rogue" enough.

Slightly off-topic, but I used the following method to generate names for my hunter pets.
After taming a new beast, I'd create a shortlist of generic/themed names (e.g. if it was a cat, I might go with Ghost. Saber, Stalker, that sort of thing). Then I'd arrange for a guildie to meet me in the city, change my language to Trollish, and /say each of those names.
He'd then report how each one "translated" into Trollish on his screen, and I'd pick the one that sounded the coolest. :)
Just a mild bit of nerdy role-playing.

From the thread that inspired this thread:
Blødhemn - my Druid, it means vengeance in blood
Blødskjold - my Paladin tank, it means blood shield
Blødforsvinne - my Rogue, it means to vanish in blood
Blødvellyst - my Shaman, it means blood lust
Blødsvømme - my DK, it means blood bath
(I have more, but I think you get the hint)
Ehm, sorry to say this but... these names aren't anything that resembles what the Norwegian words really mean compared to your translation. I'll just translate your names into what they'd really look like in Norwegian.
Blødhemn - Blodhevn. Hemn is more of a dialect difference than a real word.
Blødskjold - Blodskjold
Blødforsvinne - This doesn't have a one-word translation, it would probably be something like "forsvinne i blod" or in one word "Blodforsvinning"
Blødvellyst - Blodtørstig. Vellyst actually means sensual pleasure
Blødsvømme - Blodbad. Svømme means swimming
Not trying to ruin your names or anything, just correcting them into correct Norwegian. As you might recognize blød doesn't mean blood. Blod is blood. The band you're referencing probably just did a slash through the "o" to make it look more badass.
But yes part of the original inspiration for it is from my interest in viking and Scandinavian lore and mythology. 4/4 of the grandparents are from Norway, Sweden, or northern Europe. (I'm American) I even have a Norwegian coin on my keychain my grandpa brought back from when he was stationed there after the Korean war. It's from 1949.
I think I was born in the wrong country.
Yeah. You were born in the wrong country, but you have the right language. Norwegian really sucks compared to English, we have so few words. Haha. But our country is awesome, looks good and or women are equally as awesome and good looking. ;)

That's actually an EXCELLENT idea, Rune.
If anyone has good pet names feel free to share those as well.
For example, I'm leveling my Hunter through PvP, and one of the better low-level pets I read about was the bat. I couldn't come up with a name - so I eventually went with Enyawecurb (read it backwards). I also tamed the white lion from the Horde quest in the Barrens and named him Akuzetamaso (again, read backwards).

So my toons names are not as fun, and quite a few no longer exist due to deletions or server transfers.
Main:
Kandana - Tauren and then troll druid (prior to a server transfer)
This was a randomly generated name that I never really liked but I just couldn't come up with something suitable because everything I wanted was taken and I didn't want to do any silly puns (this was before I knew how to do special characters)
Syani - Night elf druid.
This is Kandana post server and faction transfer. Not sure where I got this name. I had it on a druid alt on an RP server for awhile and liked it. I think it's a mix of random generation and adding letters.
Alts;
Vorpalbunny - Blood elf Rogue (Prior to server transfer)
Vorpalbunny did not come from Final Fantasy or Ultima Online.
She was named from Monty Python. She was a blond pigtailed blood elf rogue and my 39 twink. I created her for the sole reason of being a level 39 twink and wanted a good name and look for her. She served her purpose well for a long time but I eventually leveled her up and then server transfered her as well.
Hàrlot - Human Rogue
Vorpalbunny post server and faction transfer. I like the name/word. I have a DK on the previous server also named Harlot with a different special character.
Gigglefits - Gnome rogue and Goblin Warrior
The name just fits for both combos. The rogue is on an RP server and has heard nothing but good things about her name.
Bháis - Draenai Dk
It's a form of the word death in Gaelic, enough said.
Sáinn - Undead warlock (deleted)
Means deadlock in Gaelic, enough said =)
Talia - Hunter of multiple races
I have a hunter on any server I activly play or used to activly play on named Talia (most with special charaters) This was the name of my main in EQ, Barbarian Beastlord.
Puddinpop - Blood Elf Mage
Theres a special character in there somewhere. She is sorely neglected on the server I no longer really play on. Was created with my boyfriend who made a troll mage named Tasteyfreez.
Cynnful - Blood Elf and Human warlock
Silly name but I like it. Started the BE one then things went to hell on my server and our raiding guild dissolved so we transfered toons to another server with to be with some old friends and I made the human version.
There is more but my computer has been dead for about 2 weeks and the old toons slip my mind when I don't look at them everu other day or so

They pretty much fail when put up to literal translation, but that's not really the point ;)
I know they don't totally make sense when you look at them critically, I even said so. :)
Also, the band Enslaved didn't put the "ø" in
Blodhemn
for their album, I added that because the name was taken on my server.

Sonata
I tend to name my characters after bands or song names.
Sonata: My original NE priest on Hellscream. Named after the band
Sonata Arctica
. She healed through Vanilla raids up until the beginning of Wrath. I loved this name. When I server changed, someone already took it. I was so annoyed about it that I name changed to
Øbituary
(I figured Ø would annoy people. I was right.) and race changed to a gnome. A deadly gnome shadow priest named Øbituary? Quiver in fear!
Roija: Human rogue, named after the song
Black Roija by Kalmah
.
Kalmah: Worgen druid, see youtube link for Roija. Wicked band brah
Satyricon: Human hunter, currently leveling.
One of their songs.
All of my hunters pets have names that correlate to one of their tunes.
Moonsorrow: NE mage, my next alt.
This song is awesome.
I really love being in a pug through dungeon finder and someone recognizing the band my toon is named after. <3
